I Believe In The Holy Catholic Church…

The PopeIf you have not heard, the Pope decided recently to pull back the reins a bit on those loosey-goosey Catholics, and get back to the things that really made Catholics, well… Catholic.

Not only did he decide to do Mass in Latin once again (I think it’s called the “Tridentine Mass”), now he has said that the Catholic church is the only true church, based on apostolic authority (they think Peter was the first Pope, appointed by Jesus). All other churches are at best, deviations from the true church.

Isn’t that crazy??

I do have more to say, but… it’s late. So, here are some links. Form (and voice, if you care to) your own opinion. Perhaps I’ll comment more later…

It’s Got To Slow Down Eventually…

Apple Does Quite Well, Thank YouYesterday Apple announced it’s third quarter earnings, and actually it was astounding. They broke all kinds of their own records, and beat whatever estimates smart financial guys had predicted. Basically… they rock. Way more Macs sold than ever in one quarter. More iPods than this quarter one year ago. Tons of iPhones (and that was in just TWO DAYS) and I think iTunes is even doing better than ever.

When does it end? It’s got to… but… when? They just keep doing better!

If you can afford their stock… I’d say it’s still worth buying! It just keeps going up!

Ubiquitous WiFi

An article came out this past weekend regarding Google’s potential bid for the soon-to-be-free radio wave frequencies. If you didn’t know, by 2009, there will be no more analog TV signals… everything will be digital. This is to free up the frequencies around the 700Mhz range. One of the benefits of this range of frequencies is its ability to penetrate walls.

Google has said some interesting things about keeping the market competitive by keeping it open. Speculation ranges from Google getting into the cell phone business to ubiquitous WiFi. (The latter is something I heard about quite a while ago, but this latest news from Google seems to make it more of a real possibility than just wishful thinking.)

Just imagine… anywhere you can get a TV signal now, you will have full access to broadband internet, as well as the ability to make VOIP calls, or cell phone calls… FOR FREE! Wow. That would be impressive. I hope they can pull it off!

Read that linked article for more, or just check out the latest news from Google.

DVD Worth Buying… The Astronaut Farmer

The Astronaut Farmer on DVDWhen we saw this movie back in April, both Jen & I really enjoyed it, and I thought it would be one we would at least watch again, if not purchase on DVD. Well, it came across my Netflix new releases feed today, and I thought I’d let you know.

For a recap of the movie (and more) check my previous post linked above. To purchase the DVD (and support Greg’s Head at the same time…) click on the DVD. ๐Ÿ™‚

Free Agency in Sports

Chris Drury and Daniel Briere
As you most likely know by now, Chris Drury and Daniel Briere have moved on from the Buffalo Sabres to $$$Greener Pastures$$$. They were signed by two different teams (Rangers and Flyers) for a combined $84 million!!! Holy cow, that’s a lot of moola! The Sabres were unable and/or unwilling to match that, and in the case of Drury, he just chose to go to the Rangers (they were his favorite childhood team) instead of stay in Buffalo (who would have matched the Rangers’ offer.

So, good for those guys… at least financially. But this brings up yet again the sad state of sports with free agency and salary caps. There are many factors, and I really don’t want to get into it here, but I do want to say that I am not a fan of free agency.

I understand that it is very cool for the player. They get more money for sure, they also get the chance to determine where they will play (like Drury). But both Drury and Briere were captains on the President Trophy winning Sabres (for the best record in hockey) and they left that behind (understandably, in many ways) to pursue their goals. Not those of the team.

Does any player care about the game, or the team, or the city anymore? Perhaps that is unfair. Both of these guys said they would like to stay in Buffalo. Particularly Briere. But in the end, he was offered $25 million over 5 years by the Sabres, and the Flyers offered him $52 million over 7 years.

Yeah, I would too.

I think. Part of me says I wouldn’t. I would take the “paltry” $25M and stay with the team that I had helped build. I would not move the family and start over again… I would be OK with $25 MILLION DOLLARS. But, why take $25M when you can double it?!? So crazy.

It’s sad that this is hurting sports in so many ways. Small market teams are unable to keep up as they can not charge as much for tickets, and don’t have other sources of revenue to keep up with the larger salary caps. It’s also just raising the price of tickets in general across all the sports leagues. Many sports writers are prediciting we’ll just be seeing another lock out in the not-too-distant future if the NHL continues this way.

What if players decided they love the game, and love to win, and build a championship team. What if teams fairly compensated those players who made a commitment to stay with one team for their careers? We will likely never see a team that can repeat what the Bills did from 1990-1993, going to four straight Super Bowls … mostly due to free agency.

It might sound like sour grapes, but even before we lost Drury, Briere, and even Zubrus a couple days later, I was not a fan of free agency. Maybe it’s because my team is one of those “small market teams”, but I think it’s cause I love the idea of buildinig a team of guys you know and can root for for at least a good chunk of their careers. Now when you buy a jersey (like, #23 or #48) it’s obsolete in 3 years or less.

Too bad.

The Sabres did manage to hold on to Thomas Vanek last week, matching an offer that came in from Edmonton. They were not going to lose another one! Good for them.

I read a great article on this at NHL.com today. Check it out if you’ve got time.

The Sabres will go on. As will the Bills, and every other team. It’s the path that pro sports have chosen. I do wish there was some happy medium where players could be happy, not at the expense of the team, city, fans, owner… and vice versa. I don’t think we’ve found that just yet.

iPhone-mania

In case you haven’t heard… Apple will be releasing what they think is the next “iPod”. (That’s not what they’re saying… they are just super excited about this device.) It’s a phone, but way more than that. If you haven’t seen the commercials, or read or heard much about it, you can visit Apple’s website for a great collection of information, photos, videos, tutorials, etc. They have upgraded it this week in anticipation of the Friday release of the new device.

We will not be getting one because 1) we don’t have five or six hundred dollars to spare, and 2) we don’t use cell phones ๐Ÿ™‚ But MAN do they look amazing. Really, check out the site if you have not visited it yet.

I sent out a newsletter to my Apple mailing list today (you can sign up for that here), and put up a couple updates on my blog (that’s here). But most of them link back to that iPhone site. So, stop by and pay them a visit why don’t ya.

And, if you want one… you know where to find me. I’ll be happy to help.

There’s The Steeple… Here’s The Church – AUDIOBOOK!

There's The Steeple... Here's The Church - AUDIOBOOK!I finally have posted the first chapter of the audio version of the book I published last year, There’s The Steeple… Here’s The Church! I may have mentioned this here before, but if I did not, I’m sure I explain it on the page I just linked you to. The plan is to record and release each chapter as a podcast, and encourage discussion and perhaps just encourage people to live in the greatness that is life with God and his Church.

If you haven’t heard of my book, published last July, you can purchase it through my bookstore (click the links at the top of this site) or you can even download a free PDF of the book there as well.

I am in the process of adding the podcast to iTunes, and hope to be able to get ahead on the recordings so that I can post a chapter at least weekly. Perhaps ambitious, but we’ll see.

Thankfully, I don’t need much sleep! ๐Ÿ™‚

If you know anyone who is wanting more than sitting in the pew on Sundays, or going through the motions of “church life”… perhaps God is calling them to a life that is infused with more of him? We have found that to be true, and I hope that this, another version of the text collected over the past couple years, will be an encouragement to people to follow Him in that.

So check it out, and please do spread the word. I’ll have the iTunes link up as soon as they send me the link!

Steve Jobs Keynote… Coming Up!

Steve Jobs at an Apple Keynote SpeechJust to remind…

This Monday, out in San Francisco, CA, Steve Jobs will be taking the stage once again to reveal all the fun new Apple products. It’s so funny. People pay THOUSANDS of dollars (well, I think a ticket to this event is $1595) to go see this hour or hour and a half speech, and everyone else sits at one or two websites that refresh every 60 seconds, following along as bloggers post text comments about what Jobs is saying. Hilarious.

But, that’s where I’ll be Monday at 1pm EDT! ๐Ÿ™‚

Just wanted to let you know.

If you want a ticket, go here. If not, check out this site for live updates as the event is happening…

I predict we’ll see new displays (agreeing with a friend‘s prediction), and an update to iLife and probably iWork ’06. Not sure what computer might be updated as they just refreshed the Mac Pro, MacBook and MacBook Pro lines. We’ll see.

Even with my full weekend, I’m sure I’ll find time to be at least a little excited/curious about what we’ll see on Monday. ๐Ÿ™‚

Tumblr

So, I visit LOTS of websites throughout a week’s time… Often I will post links here (and I will continue to) but I have heard of a site called Tumblr which seems perfect for posting links to cool sites I come across. I decided to start an account where I will (mostly) share good web/design tools and resource sites. So, the address corresponds with that…

bwd.tumblr.com

So.. not much there yet, but more will follow I’m sure. Bookmark it for future reference. There’s also a feed, if you know what to do with that…
