I finally decided to take the plunge and actually use a Facebook account I set up not long ago. I have heard its coolness praised over and over on the various tech podcasts I listen to, so I finally decided to try it out. Pretty neat so far. Have reconnected with one friend from high school (it’s been 15 years!) and then several other folks I haven’t heard from in a while. I put their little badge in the sidebar, so you can click over to my public page, and if I know you… add me to your friend list and I’ll add you to mine.

Friends, and Friends of Friends
As I was working on restoring our trailer yesterday (more about that later…) I was listening to a few podcasts, including the latest God Journey. The episode title was the same as the title of this post. Wayne Jacobsen was telling the story of his recent trip to Ireland to gather with around 100 people from all over the world, just to be together. It wasn’t a conference with any sort of program or agenda, just a gathering of friends.
While he was there he said he realized that the Body of Christ is not about what we do together really, “the Body of Christ is friends, and friends of friends”. He saw that as people from all over the world were connecting that week through other connections. “Hi [friend]! I’d like to introduce you to [my other friend].” And once the introduction had taken place, Jesus’ body was grown and strengthened as they shared stories of what God has done and is doing in them.
There was not one sermon, not one time where everyone sat and listened to one person. There was only one song they all sang together. There were times when they were all together, but the focus was on each other, not any one thing they were doing. In a gathering of 100 people, there might have been 50 conversations. And again, none of this was planned or scheduled… they just let it happen. And it did.
So, it sounded like a cool week where part of the body of Christ was enjoying life as (perhaps) it’s meant to be. It was encouraging to hear how God had brought all of those people together, one relationship at a time, over 30 years or so.
Toward the end of the podcast, as Wayne was reflecting on that week and some other recent events in his life, he said this:
“The fact that they’ve been 30 years related to each other says a whole lot about the fact that they didn’t have an organization to carry together, because if they would have had an organization to carry together, they likely wouldn’t still be in fellowship all of them with each other.
That’s what our [personal] track record is like. … If we hadn’t had this machine among us, and the fight for who could control it, who was willing to fight to control it, we’d probably still be great friends today. Actually, the power of the institution got between us. There was something to fight over, something to own, something to have.”
And I think those words instantly made me stop what I was doing, and make a mental note to go back and write them down. I know I have probably said something like that here before, but it is so true, and was evidenced at a party we were at this weekend.
My brother-in-law was being celebrated by his church for 25 years of service there. Twenty-five years is a LOT of years! He has also been married that long as of this coming October. So we were twice celebrating his oldness! π It was fun.
Part of the celebration was a slideshow of various moments over the past 25 years. It was nice to relive the memories, and to see old faces. (Some are not with us any more.) But as the slideshow went along, I noticed two things. First, one of the main memories was building a new building. I certainly remember how much effort we put into doing that. (That’s when I was on staff with that group as well.) It certainly was a major event in the timeline of that group’s existence. But it dominated a good portion of the slideshow, when I wished we could see more photos of people…
Second, and most disheartening, was once we got back to people, over and over all I could see were people who had been somehow hurt by others in the church, and had left hurt, disgraced, or disgruntled. I actually hope that I was the only one who noticed that. But I really did. So many faces of people who were somehow either hurt enough to leave, or else had no other option but to leave. Good people who were prime time players in the goings on of this organization.
Then I heard the words Wayne said regarding his observation of that group of believers in Ireland. They have no organization to protect. All they have is their shared life together. There’s no building, no programs, no schedule, no “Purpose“… just 30 years of living life together with Jesus in common. I couldn’t help but connect that thought with what I had seen and felt during that slideshow.
I know that people move on, and relationships (maybe even mostly) are “for a season”. But I don’t believe they have to end with hurt. Unfortunately, the specific organization I am talking about (as evidenced by what Wayne said) is not alone in its track record of disagreements leading to fractured fellowship. I am convinced that if we didn’t have a “Thing” to protect, or to run, or to serve… we would enjoy being together that much more. The “Thing” (Wayne called it a “machine”) definitely gets in between us. It can bring us together, but quite often, in the end, it gets in between us.
Living life outside of that Thing is interesting. It’s certainly freeing, and we have never known God so personally and completely involved in everything we do more than we do now. It’s also a bit frustrating relationally as many times we are not able to spend time with the friends we have made over the years because they are otherwise scheduled with events, gatherings, or meetings related to their particular Thing. Busyness is probably more an American problem than a problem with the Thing, but it is certainly evidenced there as well. But we are in America, so we have certainly seen that busyness limiting our time to just enjoy relationship with our friends who are Christians.
I don’t really have a neat summary point to all of this. Just sharing some observations from the weekend. I really think it’s true that we could really experience what the body of Christ is so much more if we weren’t trying to do these “Things”. I certainly have the limited perspective of just being me, and my 33 years or so on the planet. But from where I am now, and what I have seen… life is about people and relationships, not about what we do.
Seems that’s quite well applied to the church, too.
Ice Cream Update – Week 3
A friend asked yesterday what we’ve been up to this summer. I feel like we’ve been busy, but for whatever reason when he asked that was all I could remember… being busy. The only specifics I could remember were hanging out with friends and eating ice cream!!! Ha! That has kinda been a theme of this month…
Here’s an update on the ice cream consumption for week three of July. I have eaten ice cream every day, but I’ll just do the highlights here. If there’s no highlight, I just had some ice cream from the freezer, homemade or store bought.
- 7/15 – We only ate once at Chill & Grill with the Chis. The first time did us in! Oh, well, maybe those homemade chocolate chip cookie ice cream sandwiches, too? π
- 7/16 – I tried Perry’s White Lightning for the first time on Monday night. One of my new top five favorites!!
- 7/17 – SUPER FUN homemade ice cream party with friends. I made a gallon of vanilla, and a half gallon of strawberry on Monday night, and then Tuesday night we ate a lot! There were tons of great toppings too! It was a feast! I had three and a half bowls!!!
- 7/18 & 7/19 – Just a little ice cream from the freezer was the treat for these days!
- 7/20 – An impromptu trip to Dari-an in Farmington, NY followed a nice dinner with some friends at our house. I had mango dole-whip (a sort of soft-serve sherbet). Tasty!
- 7/21 – Our first visit to Coldstone Creamery in Pittsford, NY was the ice cream treat for yesterday! (Though I did finish off some of the homemade strawberry later that night…) Coldstone has some great inclusions (the stuff you mix into your ice cream). I had mint mint chocolate chocolate chip. And it really was that. π
Believe it or not, I really have eaten ice cream (and sometimes a LOT of it) every day this month! 21 days and counting!
Ice Cream Celebrations…
It’s probably starting to feel like all I do around here is talk about ICE CREAM! Well, for this month, I guess that’s true π It is National Ice Cream Month, and I have had ice cream EVERY DAY this month. 19 days in a row, and counting!
For tonight, we made a gallon of vanilla ice cream, and about half a gallon of strawberry last night. We’ll be bringing the finished product over to our friends’ house and enjoying that with them (and some other friends) and using the rest of the strawberry “base”? in a little kids hand-crank ice cream maker to make the rest! Should be fun. π
Speaking of fun, I meant to give a little update on how our 10th anniversary of our decision to wed went. It was a nice two day, for the most part. On the 16th, I arranged to take Jen out for a nice lunch, and got her 10 roses in a nice vase for our 10 years. She loves flowers, and we are hardly ever able to get them, so I think that was really special. Cool part was, the flowers arrived at almost the same time as the babysitter! Couldn’t have timed it any better!
Previously I had arranged with some other friends to get a little extended time out for the night of the 17th. We got to spend about four hours eating at Olive Garden, doing a little grocery shopping (WITH NO KIDS), and even stopped by a favorite coffee house on the way back to get our kids. It was a nice end to the two-day celebration.
I think it’s really cool that Jen and I get to be married. I think it’s also cool that we decided to do that in the month of July… NATIONAL ICE CREAM MONTH! Now every year, we can celebrate that anniversary with one of the best foods ever invented! π
Time to head over to the party. More ice cream!!! π
Picky Eater
We were invited to join some friends tonight for a little campfire in their back yard, complete with S’mores! I know Steve from playing basketball together for a few years now, but we’ve not gotten to spend much time together with the rest of the families.
Somehow the conversation migrated to my time in Venezuela. They asked if I was fluent in Spanish, and I said that I wouldn’t say fluent, but I do alright. “What I am ‘fluent’ in is making the Venezuelan national dish!” I explained the whole Pabellon meal with it’s various parts: rice, beans, shredded meat, and arepas. Steve’s wife said, “That all sounds great. I wouldn’t eat any of it, but it sounds great.” We all laughed, and Jen said, “Well, at least the rice, right?” To which she replied, “No. Don’t eat rice. Never had it.”
NEVER HAD RICE? I was simply dumbfounded. I asked, “You’ve never had any white rice… ever?” Never.
I asked her if she knew that she might be the only human being on the planet to have never eaten rice. It’s the main food most of us eat around the globe. Rice and beans. EVERYWHERE!
This is the most amazing food fact I have heard a person utter recently. Just simply the most amazing.
What’s not to like about rice? How can a mom of three children have lived her entire life without ever having eaten ANY RICE??!?!?!??!?!
Wow.
I asked her if I could post this story on my blog tonight, and she gave permission. She’s rather proud of her picky-ness I think. She says there are only about 5 things she eats. Hamburgers, hot dogs… french fries. Her husband chimed in, “And, pretty much any breakfast food…” So, McDonald’s and Pancakes… nice! π I said to her, “How are you still ALIVE??!?” π
I am just still amazed! Nice going Picky Eater! You are definitely the champion in my book!!!! π
Ice Cream Update: Week 2
The Chis are here. We have already had homemade ice cream and Chill & Grill. (It’s National Ice Cream Day, ya know???!!) And I think we’re planning to have a bit more before they leave… π
Wanted to give you an update on the ice cream consumption for week two of July. Let’s see…
- 7/8 – We stopped at Dairy Queen in Medina, Ohio on our trip back from visiting my family. Hawaiian Blizzard!
- 7/9 – We were tired from our trip, so the best I could do was some Breyer’s from the freezer!
- 7/10 – We had ice cream with some friends at Dairy Ann in Farmington, NY
- 7/11 – Again, a little ice cream from the freezer was the treat for the day!
- 7/12 – A tiny treat from Chill & Grill did the trick on Thursday… but of course, had some more from the freezer a bit later!
- 7/13 – Had some ice cream with fresh raspberries for lunch on Friday!!!
- 7/14 – Enjoyed some ice cream at Chill & Grill with Friends, and then came home and made about a half-gallon of homemade vanilla ice cream!!!
- 7/15 – The Chis came over from Buffalo to eat at CHILL & GRILL and we had some home made ice cream cookie sandwiches. (I made the chocolate chip cookies yesterday, and we squeezed some of the homemade ice cream in between two cookies using the ice cream sandwich maker from Pampered Chef. And, I’m thinking we’re not DONE!
More to come! There’s an entire 16 days left in NATIONAL ICE CREAM MONTH!!!!!
Lurkers
You know who you are. You are the ones who read this blog regularly. Perhaps even stopping by daily. You know the ins and outs of life in the Campbell home – and even crazier, life in GregsHead. But even though the link below invites you to comment… you never do.
You… are the Lurker.
So tonight, as a CD Release Party for some friends of ours I met a guy who might fit that category. He recognized me from various things our family were wearing. π Things I have mentioned here on the blog. Turns out he’s a friend of another friend, and has been reading the blog for a while. But I can’t recall (m)any comments from Shane… π
So here’s my invitation to anyone out there who has been reading this blog but not had a reason, urge, or any other compulsion to add their two cents (or even just say hello) to GregsHead.net. If you’ve left a comment before, you’re welcome to here as well, but this post is for anyone and everyone who might fit the Lurker bill. This is your chance to come out of the shadows!
π
If you still don’t want to comment… that will be just fine. Glad you’re reading along. π
July 4th Adventure Week
When we were on the last leg of our return trip home last night, Jen & I were recalling the several consecutive late nights (and/or full days) we had strung together for our children. We counted three… then four… then… a WEEK. I think it goes back to our big FOOD FEST on July 1st. So far, this July has been packed full of goodness.
You know of the Food Fest, as well as the National Ice Cream Month celebrations. Perhaps you also know of how we celebrated July 4th on July 3rd with Jen’s family down by Canandaigua Lake? And perhaps you also know that we drove nearly FIFTY MILES to see fireworks on the real July 4th down in Lima, NY? Good times.
How about how we drove to Springfield, OH – the place of my birth! – on Thursday July 5th, and met up with my Grandma, my Grandma & Grandpa, my Mom & Dad, their friend Paul, my Uncle Jim & Aunt Becky, and my Uncle Jim & Aunt Sara for dinner at Cici’s Pizza? And then we went out to see a restoration project my second Uncle Jim (from above) is working on for the Clark County parks… did I mention that? AND THEN we headed down to Grammy & Grandpa’s for baths and night time routines… completely exhausted. Once again, good times. π
Oh! I know I mentioned the Creation Museum on Friday July 6th… it’s created quite a firestorm in the comment section (at least as far as commenting generally goes at GregsHead.net. And, you also know that we went to one of the Esther Price chocolate stores that day, along with Graeter’s Ice Cream. But, did I mention that was following some fantastic BBQ ribs, pulled pork, and other such goodies? How about that after that long day, and following baths and bedtime routine (which took longer than it should’ve thanks to Julia) that Jen & I went out on the town at about 11:15pm or so??? Went to Applebee’s for half-price appetizers. π Again… good times.
On Seven Seven oh-Seven we once again started out first thing in the morning, just doing a little drive around the countryside. We’ve heard that Indiana has some fantastic home school regulations (like… they have NONE!) so we have always considered moving down there to be near my family, and free from the more “looking over your shoulder” type of regulations that NY currently has. So, we just wanted to see what those little towns were like. We had a nice lunch at a little diner in a small town of about 5000 people. It was a nice lunch, but not a place we’d want to live. Plus, it was hot. π (Big black mark against in my book…) π We drove around a bit more, just taking in the scenery, and then headed over to Springfield area for the evening’s fun.
We met up with my cousin Jimmie and his wife (didn’t get to see their daughter though! she was sleeping!!) π We spent 15-20 minutes with them and then headed over to meet our friends at Young’s Jersey Dairy. They’re headed to Ecuador on Wednesday I believe, so we were glad to get to see them before they head overseas. Spent more time than we expected to with them, after they locked their keys in their car. π Not what you want to do on a hot day… but we had a good time, and of course, had some great ice cream!!! Got to feed goats, too.
As July has gone… 07/07/07 was also… good times.
Sunday began early as Julia decided to mostly NOT sleep the night before, and since we were planning to leave early Sunday morning anyway (early for us…) I got up at about 7:30 or so and started getting stuff ready. Thankfully, the kids really were exhausted and I think the younger three took at least two naps each on the trip home! That was really nice. For everyone. We also stopped along the way for Skyline Chili (At 11am! That was funny!) and Dairy Queen! Also found a nice McDonald’s playplace up in NY for dinner. It was a nice trip. Even got to stop by Willowbrook and drop off some goodies for our friend Leah. Good times.
That brings us to this morning. Have you noticed that sometimes when kids are tired, they don’t actually sleep as much as when life is more “normal”? EVERYONE was up early this morning, which is not the best way to start a morning (for me, I guess) but, that’s how it started. I walked to the post office to get a check that I needed to deposit in the bank. Man, it was steaming hot even before 9am today! Then I got home and noticed we didn’t have milk yet… so, off to our grocery store I went. π I was a nice dad and brought home donuts for the kids for breakfast, too. π
So, it has been an adventure everyday since the start of July. I’m hoping that 07/09/07 will be a bit back to normal. I think it just might be.
07.07.07
It’s just fun to put that in print! 07.07.07. We are planning to meet with some friends at Young’s Jersey Dairy in Yellow Springs, OH today – an awesome ice cream (but so much more!) place in the land of my birth – and originally, thought it would be fun to meet at 7:07pm on 07.07.07. BUT, alas… they are not able to. We’ll be getting together earlier.
Will have to figure out something else to do on that fun date. We’ll have to wait a year and a month till the next such date. π What will you be doing on this “special occasion”?
Perhaps something involving sevens?
Let me know in the comments if you have any good ideas. π
No Other Gods…
My neighbor has a blog (that I shant link, since I believe it is not a public blog…) and she was sharing some stuff about her (successful) endeavor to quit smoking. One line caught my eye. She likened her smoking to idolatry. Now, I don’t think that smoking by itself is a sin, or idolatrous. My neighbor says it is for her, and so, she is right. It’s something that gets in between her and God.
When she said that, I thought, “You know, that’s a cool way of thinking about idolatry.” God tells us to have no other gods before him. And “ta not to” worship idols. That is mostly meaningless to us today, because no one (not many?) actually build big ugly stone “idols” and offer sacrifices or bow and/or pray to them. Do they? So, it’s hard to connect with what God is saying there. But if you think of God’s ultimate goal for us is to reconcile us to him, in full relationship with him… he doesn’t want anything getting in the way of that full connection with him. (For our sake, not his.)
I remember hearing that nowadays an idol can be pretty much anything… a relationship, a favorite hobby, even just drinking Coke. And I think probably Sunday school teachers can take that a bit too far. But what my neighbor said helped me see that idea from a slightly different perspective. The badness is not that God is not getting all of us, and we’re somehow not measuring up… the badness is that whatever is distracting us from the fullness of the relationship he intends us to be in with him is limiting the Life we’re supposed to be living. That can be smoking, drinking, gossiping, even just the internet and checking e-mail? π
You’ve heard it said that God wants all of us, and I believe that’s true… but I am not sure that I have completely understood that over the years. I think I understand that God’s motivation is not to be the cosmic Rule Enforcer, but rather, the friend and Father who only wants the best for us. I know I want that for my kids, and I am so flawed in my fatherhood it’s ridiculous. So if I can even know that love that wants my kids to have the fullest life possible… flawed as I am… how much greater is that desire in our perfect Father?
Anyhoo… thanks neighbor for some good thoughts on why God wants to get the stuff out of our life that gets between us and him. And congrats on six months. π
