Deconstruction

I had Kirstie up in my office today for about 30 minutes (before her nap, and after Jen left for an appointment). She was supposed to play with toys and read books while I worked. Well, that didn’t work. πŸ™‚

So, I got down from my desk and played blocks with her. We built a few lincoln log houses and played with the windows and doors in them, and the little men that go in and out. It was fun.

However, I noticed that it is so much easier to tear down than it is to build up! We would painstakingly add each log, carefully engineering each step of the process, and then two seconds after it was done, her tiny hand was demolinshing our new creation!

Oh well. We had fun. πŸ™‚

Apple Unveils New Products at MacWorld Expo

New From Apple
SAN FRANCISCO, CA – In a much anticipated keynote address, Steve Jobs revealed the new products Apple has been working on behind the scenes as many Apple enthusiasts followed via web updates. (Including, Yours Truly) πŸ™‚

Included in the new products, and perhaps the news of the conference, was the first appearance of an Intel processor in a Mac. Both the iMac and the new line of laptops, the MacBook Pro, received the processor upgrades. Reported to be 2x to 5 x faster than their predecessors, the new Macs should be an instant hit.

Jobs also reported on the sales for Apple of both their Mac line of computers as well as the iPod line of MP3 players and they were staggering. Since 2001, when the iPod was first released, Apple has sold 42 million iPods. Thirty-two million of those were sold in 2005, and 14 million of those were sold in the “holiday quarter” of 2005. That’s up from 4.5 million last year around the holidays. Apple’s dominance continued with the iTunes music store, now also selling videos, the store has sold over 850 million songs since its inception, and over 8 million TV shows have been purchased since Oct 12th of last year. Their success is evident in an 83% share of the digital downloads market. Again, staggering.

A few of the items predicted here at GregsHead.net were unveiled as expected, but missing from the new line of products was the DVR Mac Mini. The rumors are still fairly strong regarding this item, so stay tuned for a future release of such a gadget. It will come… eventually. πŸ™‚

To wrap up, here are the predicitons made prior to the speech this morning, along with related (and unrelated) actual releases from Apple. Enjoy.

  • Intel Laptops:
The biggest news in the Mac world is the switch to Intel processors to happen this year. The target date was June of 2006, but knowing Apple, they are ready to unveil something today! Look for a new revision of one of the laptop lines (likely the iBook) with the new processor included.

Indeed, the MacBook Pro was released today. It’s thinner than Apple’s current 17″ PowerBook G4, has a 15.4″ high resolution screen, comes with iLife ’06, a remote, built-in iSight video camera, and Apple’s popular Front Row application. Obviously, the biggest improvement is the Intel Duo Core processor, available in 1.67Ghz and 1.83Ghz for $1999 and $2499 respectively. The new processor is reported to be 4-5x faster than the previous PowerBook G4 processors! Quite an upgrade!

  • Mac Mini: DVR:
Another likely candidate for the Intel processor would be the budget Mac, called the Mac Mini. But look for more than just a processor upgrade for the tiny Mac… this one will go in the living room, not the office! Small, but powerful, this machine will come with Front Row, and possibly even new DVR software! With iTunes offering video content now, this little machine would be perfect!

This little gem has not yet come to fruition… but don’t give up hope just yet… πŸ™‚

  • iLife ’06:
Rumor has it there will be a revision of this package (this is the iTunes, iPhoto, iMovie, iDVD and GarageBand suite) that might include a web deveolping program called iWeb. Look for a revision of the .Mac package that Apple offers as well

As predicted, Apple upgraded its iLife suite of software, offering enhanced versions of all the current apps as well as a new web creation application called iWeb. Offers features like podcasting, blogging, and cool photos to web slideshow publishing. There were also significant improvements to iPhoto, GarageBand, iMovie and iDVD. Check Apple’s website for complete details.

  • iPod FM:
    Something I saw just today… perhaps a new iPod with a built-in FM tuner? We’ll see….

Apple did release a special set of headphones with a remote that allows your current iPod (video and Nano only) to receive FM stations, which you can view and control on the iPod screen. Pretty nifty little add-on for $49.

Other releases:
Apple also announced an update to their OS, OS 10.4.4, updates to the iWork ’06 software package, and New TV content at the iTMS.

This Is The Day…

Today is the big keynote speech at the annual Macworld Conference and Expo in San Francisco where Steve Jobs presents all the amazing new Apple products! It is a greatly anticipated day in the Campbell home, and I will be watching it as it unfolds (well, watching the news come across the various Mac sites… the video comes later…)

Ten minutes before the speech begins at noon EST, I thought I would make my predictions, based on all the rumors I have heard, and my own thoughts on the matter…

Still Here…

Hey there…

Just wanted to let you know that I am still here. In case you have not clicked over yet, I have been posting the daily happenings at Everyday in 2006, my experiment in the ordinary. Just keeping track of the major events of each day and will take a look back at it next December or January and relive an entire year, day by day. Should be fun. πŸ™‚ So, check that out if you like.

This week promises to be finally back to “normal” with the close of the football season, and a lighter schedule for the Buffalo Bills Review (which means no double shifts on Monday where I don’t get to sleep until 5:30am!) and also the end of the mad crazy holiday season, with gigging and family visits and all. Looking forward to a regular sort of week!

Stay tuned for some blogs this week. I feel several coming on!

Oh, and also, I am working on the second book of blogs. Compiling them as we speak. Well, not like, as we speak, since, we’re not speaking, actually…

Well, you know what I mean…

πŸ™‚

An Experiment

Hey folks. Just wanted to let you know. I will be starting a new blog page. It’s an experiment really. Sometimes I don’t post stuff to GregsHead.net because this has become a place to share my various phiosophical musings (as the page header explains.) But, I thought it might be neat to keep a record of what happens all 365 days in 2006 using this nifty blog technology.

Thus was born EveryDay06.blogspot.com.

I will begin posting to this page on Sunday, January 1, 2006.

Happy New Year!

All In One Day!

We left our house at 9:30am on Wednesday, heading for a quick visit with much of my extended family in Springfield, OH. We would be having dinner with my cousing at his Grandma’s house (along with some amount of the rest of his family) and then crashing that night at his place with his new bride. We were looking forward to it.

Now, if you know anything about us, we are pretty good at traveling usually. We are not usually sprinters, we are marathon runners. We know how to hunker down for the long haul. Dude, we have traveled over 1000 miles in one day with three kids. I’d say that qualifies as a marathon! Well, on this day, we were not going to do the marathon, since we had a schedule.

We stopped for lunch (almost an hour late!) at Skyline Chili in Cleveland, OH and met some friends who have lived in Ecuador for the past decade or so (but are now in the States for a little over a year). We had a pretty quick meal with them, catching up on the past four years or so. πŸ™‚ (Not really, but sorta…) They have four kids as well, who are growing up! Was fun to spend a quick 45 minutes or so with them!

Then we were off! Headed now to Springfield for dinner. We stopped only to get gas, and let the pregnant lady walk for 10 minutes, and then we pressed on to our destination for the night.

At 7:00pm, we finally arrived at my cousin’s Grandma’s house, and when we came in, there were lots of people there! My cousin Jimmie, his sister Sarah, then their Grandma & Grandpa, and also my cousins cousins. πŸ™‚ It was a nice full house! So we had a great Grandma-like meal (pot roast, home made noodles, home-made mashed potatoes, etc, etc, etc) while chatting with Jim’s side of the family. That was fun. Kirstie had a blast with a new Grandma and Grandpa to play with! πŸ™‚

Later that evening my Aunt and Uncle came over to the house to visit. So we saw that whole side of the family there that night. πŸ™‚ We were fairly exhausted by now, about 9:30 or so, and happily headed back to cousin Jim’s house.

When we got there, they had some presents for the boys, so they opened those while I helped get the baby bed ready and got her laying down. The boys played with their new toys (and Kirstie was trying to sleep with her new toy) πŸ™‚ and we talked for another hour or so, before we started getting the boys ready for bed. After a little set up of the room, we got everyone in bed by 11pm. Whew! We were tired!

The next day, we saw the rest of the family! We had breakfast with Grandma Alta (my Mom’s mom), lunch with my other grandparents, and my aunt and uncle on the Campbell side, and Jimmie and Sarah joined us as well! After lunch we hit the Goodwill store next door to the restaurant, and then picked up a christmas present from Grandma and Grandpa at their house, before heading back to cousin Jim’s for a nap! Whoa!

So within less than a day we had visited with all of my extended family in Springfield, OH! On our way out of town, we stopped by Young’s Dairy in Yellow Springs, OH (a GREAT, FUN family tradition) and played with the goats and cows and pigs and then got some free ice cream cones c/o my Aunt Sara (from lunch earlier that day!)

We got to my parents house that night and had dinner with them and opened christmas presents, and then well….

We were tired.

My Bad!

Hey folks! Welcome back! Don’t know how long the page was down for you, but due to some communication errors from the domain registrar, I was unaware that the domain was expiring on December 28th! So, I was trying to get my mail (at this domain) on Thursday and found out that the domain was in fact EXPIRED! ARGH!!!

So, thanks to my great domain registrar (they really are!) we are back in action here!!!

Sorry for the inconvenience. πŸ™‚

The End

Jake Colsen

We have referenced the online book by Wayne Jacobsen a few times before, but I thought I would post the link again here, since the book is now complete. Stop by the website and download the book in PDF format, or just read it right there in HTML. Great story. Well told, and is not too far off from ours. Except for hanging out with John the Baptist…

(Just read it, and you’ll see what I mean…) πŸ™‚
