The Way It Should Be

Estimated reading time: 1 minute(s)

I heard on a podcast recently that Starbucks has a policy that they will stay open 10 minutes later than their posted closing time, just in case someone was rushing to get there and wanted to get some coffee before close. Ten minutes is not a lot, but if you recall, one of my pet peeves is the insane American way of closing BEFORE posted closing times!!!! (Read this if you don’t recall.)

Not sure if that’s true or not. Tyana? You reading this? What’s the policy?

If that’s true, it’s awesome, and I wish more companies in America would follow suit.

  1. I’m sure the employees love it.

It bothers Chi not that a place closes before the posted closing time. I mean by a few minutes, not an hour or anything. I know that when I’m at work, I want get out as early as I can. Why should the neighbourhood barista or burger guy not wish the same?

If a place is closing soon, Chi generally just doesn’t go in. No need to stress out a bunch of people who just want to go home. Anyhow, there are very few things that I need immediately that can’t wait till tomorrow anyhow.

Maybe your habits have changed but I remember that you’re late for pretty much everything. So I can appreciate why this seems like a good idea to you. 🙂

  2. Hey Chi,
It’s just customer service. Thinking about the customer instead of yourself. (Honor others above yourself… says that somewhere in the Bible, too). I know days can get long, but if you’re in that sort of job, you can make it another 10 minutes.

I love the small town mentality in Palmyra… the bank stayed open for a few minutes one time when I called ahead. That doesn’t happen just anywhere. But when it does, the business has more of my loyalty.

Your job is a bit different. You don’t have any direct customer service role, eh? That’s all I was talking about.

  3. Dude, I can’t believe you just pulled a Bible verse on me…

If that’s the case, think of the people who just want to get out of there and go home after a crap day. Putting them above yourself and all.
