I found this yesterday in a news article, and thought it was fascinating, and wanted to pass along.
Apparently, people are trying to build elevators that will take us (and heavy payload) into space.
Fascinating.

it’s pure sci-fi. I read that book by Arthur C. Clarke about space elevators (called “The Fountains of Paradise”) which was fantastic but also considered by most reputable scientists to be entirely impossible for a number of reasons. Fantastic book though, highly recommend it.
On the other hand it would be cool, wouldn’t it?
