You’re Gonna Have To Do Better Than That…

Sabres vs Senators - 2007 Eastern Conference Finals
The studio guys said the Sabres were outskated. “The Senators were the better team,” they said. And who can argue with a 5-2 loss on home ice in Game One on Thursday night? Not exactly the way you want to start off the series!

I’m not sure overall the Sens were better, but man, our special teams is either off-the-charts bad, or those guys are fantastic. Two power play goals and a short handed goal (two breakaway chances on the Sabres first power play, with one of those resulting the in the SH goal.) That really set the tone for the rest of the game.

Ottawa did look like they wanted it just a little bit more. The Sabres came back from a 2-0 deficit to tie it in the second period. But on an unfortunate play where a routine clear-out went right to an Ottawa player who threw it toward a teammate rushing toward the net, the Sabres found themselves down 3-2.

And that’s where it all fell apart. Passes were being missed, hustle was just not there… That’s when the Senators were the better team. They netted one more power play goal to make it 4-2 and ended the game by out-racing our defenseman to a puck and scoring an empty netter.

1-0 Ottawa.

The Sabres get their second chance on Saturday. I actually expected Ottawa to get one of these first two games, just not the first one. Sabres have shown all year they are not afraid of adversity. For a brief moment I actually thought they could still win Game one, down only 2 goals with 2 minutes left. With this team, you never know!

It’s a long series… but not if they don’t (1) improve the special teams… they just have to, or it will be over fast! And (2) want it more. They have to want it more. Leave everything on the ice, as they say. They’ve done it before, and if they do it again, we’ll advance to the finals.

But we’re a long way from that tonight.

Game 2 – 8pm Saturday May 12th on Versus.

Another Example of My Weirdness

Earlier this week I got up early to go for a walk, as I have been doing since the beginning of 2007. But not long after I got up, I realized that I really don’t have to do this anymore. I forced myself through my routine, and even left the house. But my walk was just a brief trip out for errands, and was just not as enjoyable.

First, it was a lot hotter. I couldn’t even wear my cool, thick, hooded sweatshirt. Too hot! Then, there were tons more people! That was crazy. I had to watch for traffic! πŸ™‚

When I got back home I realized that not only is it not as enjoyable as my walks earlier in the year, but really it’s less necessary. I started going for walks between 7 and 8:30 or so in the mornings because I felt like I wasn’t getting any exercise at all. Not even just exercise… I mean just… movement. πŸ™‚ So, it seemed like a great way to do that. Slap on the iPod Shuffle, catch up on a podcast or two, and get about 2 miles of walking in.

And it definitely was!

But now, I play outside with our kids… and our family goes for walks nightly (last night I took the kids up to the park about a mile up the road. We walked along a wooded trail filled with all kinds of wild-life, played in a park, and walked back! Sore feet after that one!!!) So, walking in the mornings is no longer necessary.

So I’m not. πŸ™‚

The funniest part is what I titled this entry… it’s just more proof of how different I am. Everyone else STARTS walking when it warms up. Not me! That’s when I stop. πŸ™‚

Why am I so different? It’s very strange…

Relocation

I had to relocate my office today. My computers were finally overheating (one shut down a couple times while it was working) and so I figured I should give them a rest. I shut down most everything, and transferred my mail to my laptop so I could work off of that. It really didn’t work that well… but I’m up and running now. πŸ™‚

It’s kinda cool though. I have all my files here, and am listening to a podcast from my computer upstairs (streaming to this one) and even brought down my candle. (I like candles.)

So… hopefully my computer and I can be a bit more productive down here…

Rubber-Necking, Heroes, and We Just Don’t Get It

Car Pile UpThere was an auto accident right in front of our house today. Thankfully it did not involve any of us. Actually, it only involved one person – the driver of one vehicle, who collided with a parked car on the side of the road. But this story involves several different folks, and a peek into our human nature.

First there is the driver. For whatever reason she was obviously distracted, and not paying attention to the road. It’s a 30MPH road in front of our house… close quarters, with cars, people and other random things to watch for. She missed the car that was parked right in her path. Well, and then she did not miss it.

SCREEEEECH — BOOM!

I jumped from my chair and saw the accident out my 3rd story office window. Two cars… one driver. “Is the other driver unconcious? Or… dead???” I thought. The driver of the first car was pretty shaky, but managed to get out of the car without a problem. She did look very emotionally shaken up, and was holding her right wrist. (Later it was her left, so.. that was a bit confusing.) She was a middle-aged woman… but did not seem to have been in this position before. Crying, and obviously shaken.

Then there is me. I was in the middle of stuff that, compared to such a traumatic incident, seems a bit trivial. But, I was in the middle of it. I was working on trying to get some PHP and Javascript code to play nicely together. But my perplexing task was interrupted suddenly, rudely, by a loud CRASH outside my window. I got up, saw what happened… saw another guy come running to help… and was about to pick up the phone to call 911 when I heard that same guy say “M’am, please call an ambulence.” I figured he wasn’t talking to me… so I was just going to sit down.

Then I felt like a heel. How could I just sit down? Someone was really hurting right outside my house, and I was going to try and figure out my PHP puzzle… as if nothing happened?

Needless to say, after only a few seconds of debate in my own head… I got up and went downstairs to see how I could help.

To my surprise… Jen was there… and she was the “M’am” that the dude had asked to phone for an ambulence! (She was gone on some errands last I knew… so that was a bit of a shock. After a quick, disoriented conversation with her where I found out she had only moments early returned from her errands, I quickly was very thankful that she had not been in the street for this woman to run into.

Very thankful.

And, a bit impressed as my wife had jumped right in to a crazy situation… helping where she could help. Nice one, Jen! πŸ™‚

So, with the situation seemingly “under control”, I did go back to my office to resume my scripting work.

But, it was hard to focus. After a few moments, I arose from my chair to check on the progress. This time I saw a few more people.

First there was the hero. This was the somewhat athletic-looking guy who hurried to the scene within moments of it happening. He took charge right away and was compassionate to the woman who was driving, and equally in control and helpful to others who were attempting to help. He was definitely the on-the-spot leader.

Then there were the police. They came in and had a similar leadership, but actually… their leadership was due mostly to the clothes they wore. Not that they were not good at their job, or not helpful. They were definitely that. It was just a bit different than the first guy to arrive.

Then there was the main “victim”. The owner of the other vehicle. At this point, as the driver of the car that did the damage was sitting on the side of the road in obvious physical and emotional pain, being tended to by the ambulence crew who had just arrived, one of the police officers was assessing the damage to this lady’s car. In the brief seconds that I saw her, she had two or maybe three very visible reactions of anger and disgust. Seemingly aimed at the incompetent driver who had just dented her bumper!

This was the saddest picture of human nature today. Our amazing capacity to miss what is happening around us. We are so good at seeing every event for how it affects us. Somehow, though another human being was clearly hurting only a few dozen feet from her, this car owner could only think of the damage done to her car, and I guess, what that meant to her. I can’t know her heart, but her body language was pretty clear.

I guess I would be mad too. (I know there are logs in my eyes…) But really. Couldn’t the very present reminder of the sobbing woman on the curb have jolted her into realizing there is more to life than a pristine bumper? Couldn’t she have thought about someone else in that one brief moment?

Maybe she did later.

But anyway… that short 5-10 minutes today was quite a fascinating look at multiple sides of our human nature. We’re easily distracted, yet compassionate. Selfless and quick to act on another’s behalf, yet selfish and completely oblivious to the condition of those around us.

It was a pretty interesting break to an otherwise ordinary day.

Hockey Update

The Final Four are set. Sabres vs Senators in the East, and Red Wings vs Ducks in the West. 1 vs 4 and 1 vs 2. I would love to see Sabres/Red Wings… just for the Dominik Hasek angle. But the Ducks are FAST (like the Sabres) and can score… would be an exciting Stanley Cup Final.

But wait… we have to beat the SENATORS first. πŸ™‚

The Sens have been playing great. Great goaltending, great defense and they’ve been scoring. That’s about all you can ask. The Sabres will need to play at least at the same level they did since the last 10 minutes of Game 4 in round two. I think they know that now… so they just need to do it. They’ll need to improve their special teams as well. They showed flashes of great penalty killing but the power play was horrendous. (Save for a couple clutch goals in the last two games.)

Here’s the schedule for the Sabres series vs their hated division rival, Ottawa:

  • May 10 – Ott at Buf – 7pm
  • May 12 – Ott at Buf – 8pm
  • May 14 – Buf at Ott – 7pm
  • May 16 – Buf at Ott – 7pm
  • May 19 – Ott at Buf – 2pm*
  • May 21 – Buf at Ott – 7pm*
  • May 23 – Ott at Buf – 7pm*

* – if necessary.

I see the series going at least 6 games… though it wouldn’t surprise me if the Sabres won in less. It would shock me if the Sabres were beaten in less than 6.

They have had one goal since losing in game 7 to Carolina last year. They’re almost there. Four wins to the Stanley Cup Finals. Eight wins to Stanley Cup Champs.

Go Buffalo!!

The Mormons – PBS

PBS: The MormonsLiving in Palmyra perhaps makes things with the words Mormon, or Latter-Day Saints, or Joseph Smith stand out at a quick glance. I caught an article today on a recent PBS series (that I was unaware of) called The Mormons. I found out that they have posted the entire video online, so I watched bits of it throughout the day. It’s a fascinating historical look at Joseph Smith and the LDS church. If you’re interested in such a thing… here are the links:

What Color Are Yours?

EyeThis morning, I was brushing Kirsten’s hair, and I think I made some comment about how beautiful she is… because she is. πŸ™‚

When I did, she said, “What color are yours?”

I actually didn’t know what she was talking about, but she was staring at my eyes, so I think I clarified, “My eyes?”

She nodded. Then she said, “Yours are black. Everybody’s are black.”

I just smiled and said, “Yes they are. You’re right. We’re all the same!”

Isn’t that cool? Kirstie doesn’t see the differences at age three… she sees the similarities. Not all the time, but this time, I think she got it right. We all have black.

And so, we’re the same. πŸ™‚

Controversial Call in Game 4

You may have heard (I forget if I might have said here on this blog) that the Sabres lost game 4 in NY and are now tied with NY at 2 games a piece. But perhaps it might have been different had the video review guys been a bit braver, and made the call that every human eye could see… it was definitely a goal. The goal was not allowed on the technicality that there was no video shot of “white” behind the puck (meaning it completely crossed the line).

Well, thanks to YouTube (so, not 100% credible, I suppose) I found a video that shows the shot we saw on TV where “spacially” you can tell that the puck is over the line, even though covered by the goalie’s pad. And then, a view I had not yet seen… a shot from the front. It appears to be taken by a still camera. The puck is visible on its side against the goalie’s pad. That would explain why we couldn’t see it…

And it would make it clearly a goal.

Oh well. πŸ™‚

Game 5 is tomorrow night! Go Sabres!

Here’s the photo/video evidence.

Sabres Series Tied

Sabres vs Rangers in Round 2

The Sabres unfortunately did not read my blog yesterday. The Rangers just “wanted it more” for 2.5 periods. The second Rangers’ goal lit a fire underneath the Sabres, and they played “like they were on the power play for the last 10 minutes”, said a Rangers announcer, but… as they say, “too little, too late”.

Now the series is tied, albeit due to a couple VERY close games that could have gone either way… but it is tied. And, the end was tarnished by a GOAL – very clearly a goal – that was not allowed due to a technical interpretation of the rules, I suppose. That would have tied it with 13 seconds left. But, the Sabres still could have lost. (Just, not likely with how they played the last 10 minutes.)

Now we’ll see if the Sabres really want the Cup, or not.

Game 5 is Friday in Buffalo, Game 6 is Sunday back in NY. It has turned out to be a better series that I first expected!

Go Sabres!! πŸ™‚
