Virtual Reality… Reality?

Wii Fit
A friend sent me this link the other day… it’s to a new/different version of Nintendo’s Wii. Check out the demo video on that page. Incredible. Virtual reality may not be a (perfect) reality, but it’s getting close. There is technology coming (or maybe already in use) that will allow a screen to also be a camera. (Like Star Trek!) where one pixel is a screen pixel and one is a camera! Side by side! I can see how that will allow virtual reality to be much more real. Interacting with a virtual world with no extra devices. It’s certainly coming…

Check out the video.

Julia’s Perspective

We met some new friends last night when we went to the Apple CIDER picnic (an Apple User’s Group in Rochester) on our way to the Monroe County Fair. Both of those events were quite fun, but one of our new friends had a keen observation of our youngest daughter after only knowing her for… less than an hour?

She said of Julia, “She doesn’t know she’s not big.”

Julia was keeping up with all the big kids. Ian (8), their daughter Katrina (11), Alex (5), and a couple other kids we didn’t know (probably around 7-9). She was doing the things they were doing, just a little slower… since she actually is small…

Even if she doesn’t know it.

Very cute. ๐Ÿ™‚

There’s a Dead Skunk In the Middle of the Road…

Skunk: R.I.P.“Stinkin’ to high heaven!”

When I was a young lad, my family lived in the country. Due to our secluded location, we traversed many a wilderness road. Due to these wilderness roads, we would often see, or just smell the remains of a cute little black and white skunk. And, frequently the refrain of that little ditty would joyfully leave our lips:

There’s a dead skunk,
In the middle of the road
Stinkinnnnn to hiiiiiigh heaven!

Thing is, until tonight (unless my memory fails me) I have never been the skunk’s murderer. ๐Ÿ™‚

Yes, ladies and gentlemen, as we climbed the hill on a two-lane country road, with a vehicle approaching in the on-coming lane, a tiny creature slowly scurried across the road on a seemingly perfect path for my left front tire. He missed the car in the opposing lane, but as I had originally predicted, perfectly timed his visit to our left front tire.

Within 5 seconds I was rolling up my window, and hoping the smell wouldn’t get any worse.

Now, where were those tomatoes…

So, our van stinks. Our driveway stinks. It even stinks a bit inside our house. And, maybe my clothes even stink? ๐Ÿ™‚

And there’s a dead skunk, in the middle of the road… ๐Ÿ™‚

Sabres Schedule Announced

Sabres Schedule
The Buffalo Sabres today announced their 2007-2008 schedule. (Didn’t they just finish playing the 2006-2007 season??) ๐Ÿ™‚ We were really hoping that the Sabres (1) would play the San Jose Sharks this year, and (2) that they would play IN San Jose, and then (3) that it would coincide with our trip out there this fall.

BUT, alas… they will be on a road trip during that week… and they do play in San Jose this year… just, not at the same time.

November 15th is already circled on my calendar. First game against the Senators. The first games against Drury and Briere’s new teams will be interesting as well. The season opens with a “home and home” against the NY Islanders, whom the Sabres ousted in round one of last year’s playoffs.

Bring on the hockey season! (Football first… but hockey a close second!)

Making Ice Cream This Month?

If you’re planning to make ice cream this month (National Ice Cream Month, don’t ya know!) then perhaps a visit to this site would be helpful. Found it linked off of the Turkey Hill Ice Cream blog. Seems like tons and tons of great, helpful ice cream-making information.

Making ice cream is definitely an art. As I have learned from many unsuccessful attempts at doing so. I’m good with food in general… so it’s fun when I discover something that is a challenge! Hope to keep improving my ice cream making skills this summer, and I think some stuff on the Ice Cream Recipes.com site might help. ๐Ÿ™‚

Enjoy your ice cream!

No Needy People Among Them…

All the believers were united in heart and mind. And they felt that what they owned was not their own, so they shared everything they had … and Godโ€™s great blessing was upon them all. There were no needy people among them, because those who owned land or houses would sell them and bring the money to the apostles to give to those in need.

Acts 4:32-35 (NLT)

Last night I had a dream. It was crazy. One of those very vivid dreams, and almost seemed relevant to some issues pressing on my mind and heart of late. I awoke this morning still contemplating all that I could remember from it. Some, or perhaps all of it, was related to the Scripture I later remembered and you just read above.

We were at some sort of convention of Christians. It was not a “church” thing, nor was it a “Christian convention”. It was a convention of (mostly) Christians. One of the speakers – at least for the event that I witnessed in the dream – was a friend of mine from college, whom I admire in real life for his skills and business savvy. He does business well. He was doing it well in this dream.

After one of the main session times, we were chatting (he, and I, and Jen) and he said, “Man, that was so great! I heard that one person just donated $25,000 on the spot to [this thing we were raising money for]!” (Note: I can’t remember what it was we were raising money for… but it was some facility or program or something that was to help people… it wasn’t a church building, or a church program even… but it was Christians working together, raising money for this thing.)

My reaction was, “Wow. That is amazing.” But, along with being impressed by the generosity, I was also amazed that we were spending money on this facility or program. First, I was impressed with my friend, who somehow had managed to convince people to donate such large amounts of money… ๐Ÿ™‚ But then I was both impressed (as stated above) and then incredulous at what we throw money at.

In the dream, I turned to Jen and shared those thoughts with her, and then began to think aloud.

“What we really should do together,” I theorized, “is give large sums of money like that to some organization that gets Christians out of debt. Clean slate, everything-is-forgiven out of debt. No questions asked.” I felt like I was on a roll, so I continued, “We create this organization that is a non-profit, 501c3 organization and convince Christians who have plenty to donate sums like that $25,000 – receiving their tax deduction, of course – and the organization would distribute the money to Christians who are swimming in debt.

“Of course, we couldn’t do that for ourselves,” I explained, “since it might look a little fishy. But we could take a salary as the folks who run the whole thing.” Jen’s eyes lit up at that (in the dream still), as (at least in my conscious mind) she is always wishing we had just a little bit more money to pay our bills and buy groceries. I continued, “There would be no stipulations… just an enormous, overpowering debt that could be wiped clean by the Church… Christians helping Christians. ‘And there were no needy people among them…'”

I actually don’t remember where the dream ended, but it was somewhere around there. As my conscious thoughts took over, I began to think of the ramifications of my plan. At first, it seemed quite a fine idea. It seems to me to be a much better use of money – actually helping people instead of building buildings, or creating more stuff to do. And I thought of a couple refinements that might make the idea actually fly.

First, the receiving family would commit to destroying all of their credit cards, except one. But that one would be reduced to no more than a $5000 credit limit, for emergencies. What good would it be to pay off someone’s debt if materialism – in whatever form – is the real problem? The debt will just return again.

Second, there will be ABSOLUTELY NO APPLICATIONS. The church (as you have noticed from everything I write and/or say) can not function as an institution. In so doing, you remove the life, the heart, the humanity from it. The funds would be distributed via relationships. Slower, yes. But a more vital and real solution to a difficult issue? I think so. People whose debt could be relieved would meet with someone from the organization, face to face, and after a meeting or two, funds could be apportioned.

So, theoretically, it all made good sense… and if it worked, a nice salary would help us pay our bills, and (eventually) eliminate our own debt.

But as I thought of all the logistics, and how much I seriously loathe dealing with money, and just how crazy money makes people – and how easily I would be taken advantage of… it became QUITE clear that even if this was a cool idea that came to me in a dream… I am definitely not the person to make it happen!.

Are you? Is this a good idea? Is there something already like this? What I have seen is that places help reduce debt… and teach folks how to better manage their money… but nothing as full of grace and so very church-in-Acts-like as my crazy dream-born idea.

I would be curious what you (especially if you are a follower of Jesus) think about such an idea… is it even possible in America where all must fend for themselves… you have to earn your keep… work for what you get… etc, etc, etc.

Any thoughts?

Home Defense

Home DefenseOn a recent visit to our town (OK, not that recent…) my Dad recommended the product to the right for our serious ant problem. Ever since we moved to Palmyra, we’ve had a serious ant problem. Every year, without fail. When it warms up, we are inundated with ants. Big, black, nasty ants.

So my Dad says, “Try ‘Home Defense’. It works great.” I thought, “Yeah, right…” We’d tried several remedies already, but he seemed convinced – so much so, that he bought the stuff for us – and we proceeded to apply the appropriate amount to the outside of our house.

Just tonight, as I was noticing how much food we leave out sometimes, and some of it – like the pot I made sweet tea in tonight – lined with sweet stickiness, I realized that we have had almost NO ants since applying Home Defense. (I have to say “almost” because I am honest to a fault. I’d say we have seen maybe 6 total ants since applying this, and before we did, we would have seen 6 ants per three square inches per hour!!!)

So, if you have ants… I can’t recommend this product enough! And, as with the DVD I mentioned below, if you click on the image above (or the text link) and purchase it from Amazon, they will give us a commission for that sale! Stop the ants, and feed Greg’s kids. What could be better? ๐Ÿ™‚

(By the way, as always, whenever you click my amazon links, it takes you to that item’s Amazon page, but if you purchase anything on that visit to Amazon – even if I did not link you to it – Amazon will still pay me a small commission for any items you purchase! Sweet deal! There’s a link at the top of every GregsHead.net page that takes you to a little Amazon search page where you can begin your Amazon shopping, and they’ll give us a percentage of your total. So, if you would like to help feed our kids…….) ๐Ÿ™‚ hehe.

Interesting…

I was chatting with a friend today about some updates I am doing to his website, and in talking about our July 4th activities, we got talking about family. We’re both from the same area originally… so we were chatting a bit about our various family members, seeing if there were any connections. (He’s actually a college classmate’s dad, so he was asking about my parents generation…)

After a few questions, we found out that my Mom’s Dad’s family have the same last name as some of his relatives from the same area. This is not a common name. In fact, have never met another who wasn’t related. And that they are from the same area…

Very crazy.

So, I may have just found out that somewhere way back when, my ancestors and our college friend’s ancestors are kin!

Howdy, cousin! ๐Ÿ™‚

DVD Worth Buying… The Astronaut Farmer

The Astronaut Farmer on DVDWhen we saw this movie back in April, both Jen & I really enjoyed it, and I thought it would be one we would at least watch again, if not purchase on DVD. Well, it came across my Netflix new releases feed today, and I thought I’d let you know.

For a recap of the movie (and more) check my previous post linked above. To purchase the DVD (and support Greg’s Head at the same time…) click on the DVD. ๐Ÿ™‚

Free Agency in Sports

Chris Drury and Daniel Briere
As you most likely know by now, Chris Drury and Daniel Briere have moved on from the Buffalo Sabres to $$$Greener Pastures$$$. They were signed by two different teams (Rangers and Flyers) for a combined $84 million!!! Holy cow, that’s a lot of moola! The Sabres were unable and/or unwilling to match that, and in the case of Drury, he just chose to go to the Rangers (they were his favorite childhood team) instead of stay in Buffalo (who would have matched the Rangers’ offer.

So, good for those guys… at least financially. But this brings up yet again the sad state of sports with free agency and salary caps. There are many factors, and I really don’t want to get into it here, but I do want to say that I am not a fan of free agency.

I understand that it is very cool for the player. They get more money for sure, they also get the chance to determine where they will play (like Drury). But both Drury and Briere were captains on the President Trophy winning Sabres (for the best record in hockey) and they left that behind (understandably, in many ways) to pursue their goals. Not those of the team.

Does any player care about the game, or the team, or the city anymore? Perhaps that is unfair. Both of these guys said they would like to stay in Buffalo. Particularly Briere. But in the end, he was offered $25 million over 5 years by the Sabres, and the Flyers offered him $52 million over 7 years.

Yeah, I would too.

I think. Part of me says I wouldn’t. I would take the “paltry” $25M and stay with the team that I had helped build. I would not move the family and start over again… I would be OK with $25 MILLION DOLLARS. But, why take $25M when you can double it?!? So crazy.

It’s sad that this is hurting sports in so many ways. Small market teams are unable to keep up as they can not charge as much for tickets, and don’t have other sources of revenue to keep up with the larger salary caps. It’s also just raising the price of tickets in general across all the sports leagues. Many sports writers are prediciting we’ll just be seeing another lock out in the not-too-distant future if the NHL continues this way.

What if players decided they love the game, and love to win, and build a championship team. What if teams fairly compensated those players who made a commitment to stay with one team for their careers? We will likely never see a team that can repeat what the Bills did from 1990-1993, going to four straight Super Bowls … mostly due to free agency.

It might sound like sour grapes, but even before we lost Drury, Briere, and even Zubrus a couple days later, I was not a fan of free agency. Maybe it’s because my team is one of those “small market teams”, but I think it’s cause I love the idea of buildinig a team of guys you know and can root for for at least a good chunk of their careers. Now when you buy a jersey (like, #23 or #48) it’s obsolete in 3 years or less.

Too bad.

The Sabres did manage to hold on to Thomas Vanek last week, matching an offer that came in from Edmonton. They were not going to lose another one! Good for them.

I read a great article on this at NHL.com today. Check it out if you’ve got time.

The Sabres will go on. As will the Bills, and every other team. It’s the path that pro sports have chosen. I do wish there was some happy medium where players could be happy, not at the expense of the team, city, fans, owner… and vice versa. I don’t think we’ve found that just yet.
