iTunes "Releases" Music

Estimated reading time: 1 minute(s)

iTunes StoreiTunes has announced today the beginning of their move to DRM-free music (meaning, no copy protection… which has been really annoying to digital music purchasers for quite some time). This also means that people who don’t have iPods can purchase stuff from iTunes and just put the song right on their non-Apple MP3 player now. (I still recommend iPods though…) 🙂

Read the linked article for more.

They also announced they have added Paul McCartney’s catalog (I believe DRM-free?) to the store. Another first. The Beatles have been scarce to say the least at the iTunes store. But more will be coming.

So, just wanted to let you know… click over to iTunes and have a look!

  1. At $1.29 per download, $.30 more than protected downloads, I still think a better option is to get the encrypted with an iPod.

I have a cheap little Creative mp3 player I use when I run. If I want those iTunes song I just burn them to CD and import them back in.

It’s a pain, but considering my now obsolete cassette collection, it’s not too bad.

  2. Yeah, that’s the work-around. Not too bad… just annoying. iPod + iTunes is still the best way to go.

By the way… for 30¢ more, you get unprotected tracks (to put on any device), and 192kbps (pretty much cd-quality audio).

But the cool thing is… albums are the same price. So, better file quality… DRM-free, and… same price! So, the album thing is definitely a good deal.

  3. Hmm.. usually I don’t like stuff like that either, but I can’t see the evil intent just yet. It does seem like a good way to “keep people honest” without infringing on them really. Like, most people won’t even know it’s there, unless they read the tech news, eh?

Were you planning on sharing all your iTunes purchases? 🙂

  4. Like I said, I’m not really into sharing stuff. Also, my taste in music is so awful that no one would even want anything I had.

It’s just the principle of the thing. If I buy something, it’s mine to do with as I please as long as it doesn’t hurt someone else.

Heck, my house still pretty much belongs to the mortgage company and if I don’t pay my taxes, it suddenly somehow belongs to the government, but I can still do whatever I want with it as long as it doesn’t bug my neighbours.
