Two Cuts, And A Pig-Man

Buffalo Sabres Old-SchoolAs I was putting Julia, our two-year-old, to bed last night, she was looking at my awesome, old-school Sabres shirt, with the vintage logo pasted on the front of it. She was touching it, exploring it, and without looking up she said to me, "Dad, you have two cuts."

"Cuts? What do you mean?" I asked, looking down to see what she could mean.

"Like we have downstairs. Those are round. You have two cuts, right here."

She continued.

"And you have a pig... man. Two cuts, and a pig man."

Older sister Kirstie chimed in, "That's a Buffalo. Right?"

No. I do believe that is two cuts and a pig-man. :-)

Just Sayin'...

Sabres HockeyI did a little figurin' tonight, and even if - best case scenario - the Sabres were to win all three of their remaining games, finishing with 92 points on 40 wins... we still probably won't make the playoffs!

Best I can figure, from who's playin' who from here on out... Sabres will end up tied with Washington with 92 points (that's IF they can win the rest of their games!) and if Boston loses the rest of theirs, then we'd finish ahead of them.

We need:
  1. To win the last three games, getting 6 points
  2. AND... Boston to lose all three games, getting AT MOST one more point
  3. OR, Philly could lose all three of their games, and we could sneak past them...
  4. AND... Washington to only get 3 more points. Max.
  5. OR, Carolina to lose the rest of their games. (Washington wins that division, we beat Carolina for last spot. I think.)
  6. LOTS and LOTS of luck!

Playoff Beard Hanging On For Dear Life

Buffalo Sabres hockeyThis time of year, many players in the NHL refuse to shave until they are eliminated from the playoffs. It's a bit of a good luck charm. A superstition. Not sure that's it's really all that effective, but you'll notice that most players on the Stanley Cup winners are sporting a very hairy face when they hoist the prized trophy in early June.

I do not play hockey. (Well, except for a bit of street hockey with my boys yesterday...) I just watch hockey. But I really don't like to shave, so... when my team is in the playoffs - or this year, in playoff contention - I also refuse to shave, hoping to bring the Sabres loads of good luck.

OK... I just don't like to shave. But, this is a fun reason not to!

The playoff beard is hanging around for at least two more days as the Sabres did beat Boston 2-1 in OT yesterday. They are 5 points out of the final playoff spot with three games left. In hockey, you get 2 points for each win, so you do the math. Basically, the Sabres need the Bruins to lose (they're in the 8th spot right now) and the Caps to lose (they're in the 9th spot) and they need to win their final three games. It's kinda like a playoff series already, and we started out down three games to none.

Last night did make it three games to one, but in this case... we don't control our own destiny, as they say.

So, we are watching the Caps, the Bruins, and the Sabres... and hoping for the best.

And I'm hoping I get to keep this beard a little bit longer... :-)

R.I.P. Big Ten

With State being trounced 92-74 tonight, that completed the "sweep" of the Big Ten teams in the NCAA tourney this year. Two made it to the Sweet Sixteen, none made it past that. Quite uncommon.

State scored 54 points in the second half, and did pretty well in all aspects of the game for that 20 minutes. That should tell you how the first half went. :-)

In other sporting news...

The Sabres did manage to salvage a point, but gave up another lead to lose in overtime. They basically threw away a much-needed point. That pretty much sums up the Sabres' 2007-2008 season. Work really hard, get some great goals... then have the other team tie it with 14 seconds to go, only to lose in OT. (I believe it's our 12th OT loss.) Surprisingly they are still in the hunt for the final playoff spot, but at this point, every game is a win or your out kind of game. Fun stuff.

So, it looks like my teams are either out, or soon to be out of my two favorite annual sporting events. Not a good sports day here!

Shorties

Since computer (and especially blogging) time is limited... please allow me to share some fun stories/thoughts using another list-style post...

  • Julia just turned two, but she is the smartest cookie in the bunch sometimes. This week she has been really helpful with the laundry. I don't always know whose clothes are whose, but she does! Seriously funny. And helpful! Also, she is a great talker (though sometimes hard to understand). Maybe one of the cutest things she says is when she's really excited about something, she says, "Yay-uh". (Pronounced like a souther gospel preacher, which I'm pretty sure she's never heard...) :-) Hilarious!

  • The Sabres won tonight. They keep stringing me along. They sit 5 points out of the final playoff spot with only 12 possible points remaining. Thanks to some good scheduling, the team we are chasing (Boston) is our opponent for two of those games, so we can possibly make up 4 points in those two games. There's still a very outside chance they can make the playoffs, but I'm really not optimistic about any chance of advancing if they do. We shall see...

  • Michigan State has worked their way into the sweet sixteen in the NCAA tournament. (Which is now only the terrific twelve or something after last night's games...) They really have a good team this year. Solid rebounding (as always) from our big guys, Namick & Suton, and a stellar freshman Kalin Lucas, as well as solid scoring threats in Morgan, Allen, & Gray. Ohh yeah... we also have that guy Drew Neitzel... he's pretty good. (If you don't know him, he's a senior, and he was fanastic as a sophomore at least, and has only kept getting better.) :-) They play Friday (and hopefully Sunday). Friday's game is against the #1 seed in the South region, Memphis. 9:57pm tip off on CBS. Well worth watching!

  • Kirstie just oozes nice. It's incredible. If there is ever any "not-niceness" between anyone in the family, Kirstie steps in to the edification of the one not-niced. Every time. She's so great! Such a gentle heart. She's my little lover. She often tells me, "I just love you, Dad!" And then gives me a big hug, and often a big kiss. Well, as you can guess... I just love her, too. :-)

  • Sometimes I really can't believe how old Ian is. He is nine, and definitely becoming his own person. We can see the things he really likes to do. He even talks about it. He's starting to figure it out too. He's very creative. He too is a gentle spirit. (Sometimes too gentle. :-( Easily crushed.) He's an artist. He's such a people person. Loves people. Could be his weakness actually (people pleasing) but it will also be a great strength. I'm honestly a little nervous about this transitional stage. Will I(we) handle it well? Will we be able to encourage Ian as he really begins becoming a unique individual? It's a very interesting stage for all of us. I think we are merely on the cusp, but we're definitely there. All we can do is just love him, train him best we know how, and live out what we say. And overall, make sure he knows that he is completely safe with us any time and always. That may be harder than it sounds - or I may just think too much. :-)

  • Alex is TOO picky! Argh. It's been quite a struggle with people bringing us food (a bunch of new stuff he hasn't really seen before) and getting him to eat. Not to mention the great Easter candy he knows we have... that's quite a distraction as well. :-) It was funny today when we were dealing with all that again for the 17,000th time that I actually thought of "the kids in India" when I was so mad at his pickiness. "You know, the kids in India don't have any food! They just eat rice, if they can find any!!!" (Not sure on the accuracy of that statement... but thought it was funny that I actually thought it, and sorta used it. I am truly a dad, and truly old.) :-)

  • Emma Caroline couldn't be cuter. :-) Funny story from today... we got a new monitor so Jen can be down here and Emma can sleep upstairs. All of a sudden we heard a screaming baby in the monitor! Yikes! What happened?? That was not normal. (Although, she has had a tendency to "freak out" at times...) So, Jen went to help her - but she was sound asleep. Completely still. Weird. When Jen came back down, Emma started freaking out again! Worse than before! Very, very strange... Jen went back up... Emma was completely still!!!! Finally, we sent Ian up to check while we stayed down to listen... you guessed it.. we were picking up someone else's baby!!!! Ha! Very weird. Kinda funny... very weird.

Much more to tell, but no time, and no energy with which to tell it. Must sleep.

Just When We Thought They Were Finished...

The Sabres continue to surprise us. This team has been very streaky in 2007-2008, and thought replete with talent, they seem to lose to teams they should not lose to.

Partially that is due to an amazing season of equality in the NHL. Every team can beat any other team on any night. Pretty amazing. There are 6-7 teams fighting for the final few playoff spots in each conference, separated by only a handful of points. Pretty spectacular for the fans, for the most part.

But also very frustrating.

Wednesday night the Sabres were hosting the last place Tampa Bay Lightning, very much needing to win due to the teams closest to them in the standings winning the night before. Seemed a perfect opportunity, being on a bit of a winning streak, and playing at home against a seemingly easy opponent. But don't forget what I said above. This season, every team in the league can beat any other team on any night. The Lightning apparently knew that.

Leading 2-1 after one period, and 4-1 after two (with the Sabres mustering only 2 shots in the second period) the Lightning seemed in complete control, and Sabres' fans booed their team off the ice into the intermission.

Perhaps that had the desired affect. In the third period, the Sabres looked like the team they really are capable of being (super-talented, high-scoring, fast, aggressive, fun-to-watch, young team) and posted their second and third goals within 16 seconds of each other, then once they tied it, didn't stop till they tallied six altogether in the third period! Thomas Vanek even had a natural hat trick, scoring the tying goal, the go-ahead goal, and the clincher! Fantastic.

Tonight (Friday) the Sabres host the Toronto Maple Leafs who are closer in the standings to the Sabres, but whom the Sabres have recently had a pretty easy time with. This is a game the Sabres should win, and need to win. Two points are a must.

After the second period Wednesday it seemed the team had given up, and with only 8 games to go, it seemed time for me to face the non-playoff reality. BUT, after that third period... perhaps we are seeing the final streak for our boys in Blue and Gold? A good streak in the final eight games could conceivably get them as high as sixth place. That would pit them against the Southeast division champ (likely Carolina) whom the Sabres have had a pretty good time with this year!

They're still sitting in a very precarious 9th place for the time being, but this team has a good chance to land a playoff spot, as long as they can be the team that we saw in that third period last night.

Here's hoping they've got one more good streak in them this year! :-)

Too Many Streaks

Buffalo SabresThis is the year of the streak for the Buffalo Sabres. Frustrating to fans, perhaps even more frustrating to the players and coaches.

Just when it looks like the team is getting back to their winning ways, the Sabres seem to match a long winning streak with an equally long losing streak. The result has been hovering about in the middle of the conference standings, with just over a .500 record on the season.

Now three points out of a playoff spot, with key losses to the teams they are chasing in this current losing streak, the Sabres are definitely in danger of not even qualifying for post season play. And they know it. The players held a "players only" meeting following yesterday's embarrassing 4-2 loss to the Detroit Red Wings.

At least they understand that they need to step it up. And I believe they can. But will they? Maybe they can have a nice win streak to make the push for the playoffs, followed by their typical long losing streak, followed by a long winning streak to carry them into the playoffs? Not sure there's time. Then, wouldn't they just be saving their losing streak for the first round of the playoffs? :-)

It looks as if this year's team may have taken too much of a hit with the loss of Briere and Drury in the summer, and now losing one of their top defensemen, Brian Campbell (who always logged a lot of ice time) in a trade to the Sharks. Time will tell. And it will tell soon.

I remain hopeful, but weary of the streaks.

Not A Bad Deal, Eh?

Sabres fans are still sad to see Soupy go west to San Jose, but the guy we got in return had a decent start... TWO GOALS and an ASSIST in his first game! (He score the first two goals!) Ha!

Sabres Deal Campbell to Sharks

Defenseman Brian CampbellAs predicted last night, the Sabres did find a taker for their all-star (super star) defenseman. He will join the San Jose Sharks who are having a very fine season, and look to make a run at the Stanley Cup. He'll also join former teammate Mike Greer, who joined the Sharks a couple years ago.

The Sabres acquired winger Steve Bernier in the trade, along with the Sharks' 1st round and 7th round picks in 2008. They are definitely looking at it as getting something instead of nothing for Campbell. This article at NHL.com says that Regier tried to sign Campbell till the last minute here, and then dealt him so they didn't just lose him.

It's sad to see him go. That's three really big name players that we have lost in the past year. Chris Drury, Daniel Briere, and now Brian Campbell. Ouch.

We did sign Thomas Vanek, though...

The Sabres are in a bit of a slump, still riding a ten game streak with no losses in regulation, but only 2-3-1 in their last six. That puts them in 9th place for the moment, and out of the playoffs if they began today. Not sure if Bernier will be enough boost (or compensate for the loss of Campbell?) but perhaps the Sabres are not done dealing just yet.

They are a good team with a lot of talent. But this front office is getting a little annoying. It's time to hold on to guys like Drury, Briere, and Campbell. Is Ryan Miller the next to go?

Let's hope not.

Trade Deadlines and Free Agency

It's that time of year again, in fact this year it's one week of craziness in my two favorite sports.

On the one hand, the NHL has set tomorrow at 3pm as the deadline to deal players. A couple trades have already occurred, more will come tomorrow. The NHL is pretty good at keeping things fresh, to be sure. People get caught up in the frenzy of the deadline as Sabres' GM Darcy Regier says above.

The main name on the board for the Sabres is all-star defenseman Brian Campbell. (Note: had my sister have been a boy, that would have been her name!) Campbell is fantastic, and could be a foundational piece for the Sabres for years to come, but for some reason, they have not come to terms on an extension. He's set to be a free agent come July 1st of this year, so the Sabres are certainly considering a trade in order to get something out of losing him (if he were to choose to leave).

On Friday, we have the other side of things. Free agency begins Friday Feb 29th for the NFL. That means players whose contracts have expired can shop around to the highest bidder. Last season the Bills knew exactly who they wanted, and they got them within half a day of the free agency period starting gun! Will that happen again? Not sure. We had some big name guys who were set to leave last year, not so much this year. And there aren't a lot of big name players on the market who have generated the press you might expect leading up to such a deadline.

One deadline ends with a frenzy, the other begins with a frenzy. And all in one week!

So, stay tuned, I'll probably have a report here, and definitely on my Buffalo Bills site.

Sabres Rolling!

NHL Eastern Conference Standings Feb 11

I've mentioned here before that the Sabres were at or near the bottom of the Eastern Conference not that long ago, but since the All-Star break (and I think one game before) the Sabres are one of the hottest teams in the league! 6-0-2 in their last eight games! (They have been AWFUL in the shootouts this year! Those two shoot out losses were games they had very late leads in as well. But as soon as it goes to OT and then the shootout, it's almost a guaranteed loss of a point!)

The best part about those 14 out of 16 possible points is that most of them came on a long road trip! Seven straight games on the road. Fantastic. So, as you can see above (click for larger view) the Sabres are still on the outside looking in, but only one point out now (and they have played fewer games than most teams), and they are even only 12 points out of FIRST place! Who knows?? :-)

Go Sabres!

Luck

Sabres vs Thrashers
Last night Jen and I played a new card game called Tunge. (Not sure how you pronounce it.) She discovered it on a blog she reads and wanted to play it with me. I'm always game for a new ... game. :-)

So, we figured it out pretty easily and had a good time playing. Mostly. That is until I noticed that this game - as with many card games - is almost entirely won by luck. You just have to get the right card. "By the luck of the draw." Those aren't my favorite kind of games. I like knowing that I won (and you lost) because of my skill and cunning and craftiness.

:-)

But what all that reminded me of was my Buffalo Sabres.

See, this year, the Sabres - who last year finished the season with the best overall record - are not doing as well. At a quick glance, you might even think they were bad. I don't remember if they were ever officially last in their conference... but they were at least second to last. (That in itself is deceiving as they were still only 6 or 8 points or so out of a playoff spot.) Most people do assume that the Sabres are just a shell of their former selves, losing their two captains from last seaons, Chris Drury and Daniel Briere.

It's true that they miss the leadership and production of those two guys, but it's not true that they are as bad as their record would indicate. Hockey is certainly a game of skill, on many levels. But it also involves a good bit of luck.

The bounces have not gone the Sabres' way this year. They have outshot teams many a night, and come up losing by a goal. The goalie has made incredible save after incredible save, only to have a puck bounce off the boards behind him and either into the net, or right to the lucky opponent standing near the crease to cash in. Goal posts have rung, goals have been disallowed, injury after injury after injury have plagued this once-feared team.

We do not have cable this year, and so have only kept up with the team via radio (over the internet) and reading at sabres.com and NHL.com. We have also caught the occasional Sabres game on Versus.com. But from everything I have seen, this team is still very good. Very young, but very good.

I try and catch the post game interview with Lindy Ruff after every game. (Subscribe to the podcast at iTunes.) I like to hear what he's got to say. He's seen this team be the best, and now struggle through a year of seeming mediocrity. When things are bad, he says it. This year he has not said it. Almost every night he has nothing but positive things to say about the players and their effort and the chances they have created. He usually says something like, "It just didn't bounce our way." That has been my observation as well. The Sabres have just as much fight in them, just as much skill (though, more injuries to be sure) but they do not have as much "success".

It will come. Luck works both ways. At least over the course of a whole season. The Sabres are coming out of a horrendous stretch of two wins in fourteen games. They have won three games in a row, looking for four tonight in Atlanta, where they play a Thrasher team that is tied with them in the conference standings.

Perhaps this small streak is the beginning of things starting to go our way. Maybe the Sabres will be on the more fortunate end of bounces, calls, injuries, etc.

If we're lucky... ;-)

Ryan Miller Speaks Chinese?

I heard about this a while ago... just saw it today on the Sabres website. Ryan Miller trash talking... in Chinese. :-)

I heard an interview where the reporters asked him to say it again. It was funny. He said he just said it over and over about 50 times and just can't forget it now. So he knows one phrase in Chinese. Pretty funny commercial. :-)

Enjoy.

My Teams

As many of you know, I am a sports fan. Many sports, but not all sports. (You won't find any baseball, golf, auto-racing, or gymnastics being discussed here...) Well, there's a good deal going on with all of my favorite teams, so I thought I'd give a brief update to those who might be interested (or wonder what sorts of things I and the Campbell fam are doing these days...)

Buffalo BillsBuffalo Bills
Obviously I am following this team the closest, as I still have the number one Buffalo Bills show on the internet! :-) The Bills are also making it fun! Two weeks ago they benched last year's starter - for good - and brought in the first year guy Trent Edwards, who after a 4-touchdown game last week is now 5-1 as a starter! That's fairly amazing for a rookie, but when you factor in the unprecedented amount of injuries this team has suffered, and the already "green" talent that he has to work with anyway... that's almost impossible!

Believe it or not, the talk around Bills country is that this team of injury replacements actually has a very good shot at making the playoffs! If they win their last three games, they will finish 10-6, and the best the other two teams they are contending with can do is 10-6. Now, if they all finish with that record it's bad - crazy tie-breaking procedures - but, if just one other team is tied with them... the Bills will go to the playoffs. (I know... ridiculously hard to understand, but I do think I finally get it.) Basically, if we win all our games, and Tennessee loses just one... we'll go to the playoffs for the FIRST TIME since 1999! Wow!

So, we're pretty excited here, and had one of our most fun shows last night. If you've never checked out our Buffalo Bills show, click the link and check it out. You might like it even if you're not a Bills fan. :-)

Buffalo SabresBuffalo Sabres
I got to see a Sabres game last night - which is rare these days, since we're not paying the outrageous price for cable just to get the channel that carries their games! - and it was ... not so good. Strange, really. The Sabres (if you'll recall) were the President Trophy winners last season. That means they finished the season with the most points and the best record. Of all the teams... they were the best.

BUT, this year has been very different. They are near the bottom. Were AT the bottom at one point. Bad bounces, players lost in the off-season, injuries, strange bad luck. I saw more of it last night. They outshot the other team more than 2-1, but only scored one goal! Goal posts, great saves, missing the net, more great saves... it was crazy. And so, they are 13-14-1. I don't think they had 14 losses till March last year! :-)

Michigan State UniversityMichigan State Football
Yes, my Spartans are in a Bowl Game! December 28th at 5:00pm you can catch the Spartans and the Boston College Eagles on some channel somewhere. :-) They have a pretty good team this year. Some stars on both sides of the ball... lost a lot of close games in a very tough conference. They hung with the #2 team in the country, Ohio State. (Or are they #1? I forget...) They are all a bunch of young guys, too... so expect to see them near the top of the Big Ten next season!

That's a pretty good update for now. There might be more, but I need to get back to working on websites :-)

Go Bills, Sabres and Spartans!

Sabres Already??

Sabres Season Already??
The Sabres sent out an e-mail yesterday with an ad for pre-season tickets. The games start September 21st! Holy cow! I love hockey, and think it will be another fun season in Buffalo... but I can't believe it's hockey season already!

They are offering 50% off on kids tickets for the pre-season games. Click the photo for details.

NHL Hockey... Outdoors?

Rumor has it that the Sabres/Penguins game scheduled for January 1st, 2008 in Buffalo could be held outdoors at Ralph Wilson Stadium!!! How cool is that?!? We would really like to be there, if that ends up being the case.

[Read the Buffalo News article that mentions this possible location for the game.]

Sabres Schedule Announced

Sabres Schedule
The Buffalo Sabres today announced their 2007-2008 schedule. (Didn't they just finish playing the 2006-2007 season??) :-) We were really hoping that the Sabres (1) would play the San Jose Sharks this year, and (2) that they would play IN San Jose, and then (3) that it would coincide with our trip out there this fall.

BUT, alas... they will be on a road trip during that week... and they do play in San Jose this year... just, not at the same time.

November 15th is already circled on my calendar. First game against the Senators. The first games against Drury and Briere's new teams will be interesting as well. The season opens with a "home and home" against the NY Islanders, whom the Sabres ousted in round one of last year's playoffs.

Bring on the hockey season! (Football first... but hockey a close second!)

Free Agency in Sports

Chris Drury and Daniel Briere
As you most likely know by now, Chris Drury and Daniel Briere have moved on from the Buffalo Sabres to $$$Greener Pastures$$$. They were signed by two different teams (Rangers and Flyers) for a combined $84 million!!! Holy cow, that's a lot of moola! The Sabres were unable and/or unwilling to match that, and in the case of Drury, he just chose to go to the Rangers (they were his favorite childhood team) instead of stay in Buffalo (who would have matched the Rangers' offer.

So, good for those guys... at least financially. But this brings up yet again the sad state of sports with free agency and salary caps. There are many factors, and I really don't want to get into it here, but I do want to say that I am not a fan of free agency.

I understand that it is very cool for the player. They get more money for sure, they also get the chance to determine where they will play (like Drury). But both Drury and Briere were captains on the President Trophy winning Sabres (for the best record in hockey) and they left that behind (understandably, in many ways) to pursue their goals. Not those of the team.

Does any player care about the game, or the team, or the city anymore? Perhaps that is unfair. Both of these guys said they would like to stay in Buffalo. Particularly Briere. But in the end, he was offered $25 million over 5 years by the Sabres, and the Flyers offered him $52 million over 7 years.

Yeah, I would too.

I think. Part of me says I wouldn't. I would take the "paltry" $25M and stay with the team that I had helped build. I would not move the family and start over again... I would be OK with $25 MILLION DOLLARS. But, why take $25M when you can double it?!? So crazy.

It's sad that this is hurting sports in so many ways. Small market teams are unable to keep up as they can not charge as much for tickets, and don't have other sources of revenue to keep up with the larger salary caps. It's also just raising the price of tickets in general across all the sports leagues. Many sports writers are prediciting we'll just be seeing another lock out in the not-too-distant future if the NHL continues this way.

What if players decided they love the game, and love to win, and build a championship team. What if teams fairly compensated those players who made a commitment to stay with one team for their careers? We will likely never see a team that can repeat what the Bills did from 1990-1993, going to four straight Super Bowls ... mostly due to free agency.

It might sound like sour grapes, but even before we lost Drury, Briere, and even Zubrus a couple days later, I was not a fan of free agency. Maybe it's because my team is one of those "small market teams", but I think it's cause I love the idea of buildinig a team of guys you know and can root for for at least a good chunk of their careers. Now when you buy a jersey (like, #23 or #48) it's obsolete in 3 years or less.

Too bad.

The Sabres did manage to hold on to Thomas Vanek last week, matching an offer that came in from Edmonton. They were not going to lose another one! Good for them.

I read a great article on this at NHL.com today. Check it out if you've got time.

The Sabres will go on. As will the Bills, and every other team. It's the path that pro sports have chosen. I do wish there was some happy medium where players could be happy, not at the expense of the team, city, fans, owner... and vice versa. I don't think we've found that just yet.

All Good Things...

An Eulogy

Buffalo SabresLast night I dreamt that I was a member of the Buffalo Sabres. We were at some awards presentation. I was dressed in my full uniform, as were my team mates. I know for sure Ryan Miller was there, but I forget the other guys faces. All were bummed. Most faces were sullen, gloomy... although the reason for the gathering was to celebrate the season that was.

At some point it dawned on me, the Buffalo Sabres player that I was, that we were all privileged to be there, doing what we were doing. I said as much to my fellow team mates. We were Buffalo Sabres I said to them. We had all grown up as fans of the team (which, in reality is not the case, but made a good point in the dream...) and now here we were playing in the conference finals!

My emotional speech seemed to have a little effect on the guys as they all did manage to at least nod in agreement. It was almost time for us to take the ice and have a skate around for the fans when...

I woke up.

And the reality is, I'm not a member of the team, but we have invested a lot of time watching - and cheering on - the Sabres this year. And it was not wasted. They were fantastic. Tons of goals, tons of comebacks, tons of fun. Even the playoffs. It didn't end the way we expected it would, thanks to a fantastic performance by the Ottawa Senators.

Let me tell you, I don't like the Sens. They tend to play at least aggresive, sometimes nasty. They certainly have our number this year, winning 9 of 13 games in the regular season and playoffs. They're the division rival you love to hate. BUT... I am very happy for them. Not happy they beat my team, but man have they had a rough several years. Let's hope the Sabres don't wait as long as they do. They have been fantastically talented but, "underacheivers" for several years running now. Perhaps this is finally their year.

Let's hope next year is ours.

So, a season comes to an end. We "mourn" for a bit, but I already can't wait for the next season! I'm sure the NHL will schedule Buffalo vs Ottawa at least as our home opener, if not the season opener. :-) Already looking forward to ALL EIGHT of those games!

84 games is a looooong time to wait for another run at the Cup, but assuming we keep the core of this team together (read: SIGN CHRIS DRURY) we should have another great season next year! Already looking forward to it.

So now we get ready for Bills football! :-)

Go Buffalo!!

What A Difference

Sabres vs Senators - 2007 Eastern Conference Finals
Since the Sabres pulled off the win in Game 4 this thought has crossed my mind several times: “What a difference one of those first three games would make right now!” If the Sabres could have won Game 2, where they jumped out to a 2-0 lead, and even came back to tie the game with only 5 seconds left, but lost for the first time in 47 opportunities when they had a 2-goal lead. Or, if the Sabres could have somehow gotten any of those dozens of blocked shots through to the net in the 1-0 Game 3 loss. If they could have taken even just one of those, the series would be 2-2 headed back to Buffalo, instead of 3-1.

What a difference that would make, eh?

But, it’s not. It’s 3-1. And the Sabres have a good chance to make it 3-2. Just go out and win this game. At home. Crowd behind you. Ottawa is a good road team, but I do like the Sabres chances in this game. If they do pull off the victory, Game Six will likely be the biggest challenge they have faced all year. Ottawa fans want a trip to the finals bad.

But then... so do Buffalo fans. :-)

Can’t wait for the game tomorrow! We’re TiVo-ing it to make sure we get to watch it... as we’ll be traveling back tomorrow from our awesome vacation! (And there’s a birthday party we want to attend right in THE MIDDLE OF THE GAME tomorrow. That should tell you how much we love these friends....) :-)

Go Sabres!!!

Are You Sure?

Sabres vs Senators - 2007 Eastern Conference Finals
We managed to find a seat in front of the public TV in the Recreation Center of our little Pocono Resort. It was right outside one of the party rooms - which was in use by a Karaoke party this night - and was already populated by a few older people who were not that into the sing-fest. Oddly enough, the extra noise did not matter as there was nothing to hear from the television tonight. The audio was broken, and so we were stuck watching Game three with no commentators or other game sounds.

Overall, not too big a loss. :-)

We did attempt to pull up the dulcit tones of Rick Jeanneret’s voice on WGR550.com, but the stream was at least 2 minutes behind the live action, so that really didn’t work.

Once we managed to occupy the children, and really get to watch the game, I noticed that these were not the Sabres that I expected to see. I thought maybe we’d see the Sabres who came out firing on all cylinders in Game 5 against the Rangers. With something to prove. I thought we might see the Sabres who from early October had only one thing in the front of their collective mind: Winning the Stanley Cup.

Instead, I saw an Ottawa team who has had that same vision, that same mission, for a year or two more than our Sabres, and it was evident in every single battle for the puck. The Senators just wanted it more.

Now, there was a player or two who had that fire for the Blue & Gold. Daniel Briere was playing with some spunk tonight. Thomas Vanek has some moments, as did Derek Roy. Ryan Miller was sensational. But overall, the Sabres did not have what the Senators did. They were missing the “drive”. They were not on a mission.

So now here they are. They are down three games to none. If they lose one more, they go home. No Stanley Cup for the team who won the most games in the regular season. No championship trophy for the team who scored the most goals, and led the points race in the East from wire to wire. Even after such a fantastic season, they are only one game away from elimination.

But they’re still a game away.

You see, everyone has all but declared Ottawa the victors in this series. Well, most everyone. Lindy Ruff has not. He would like to add the 2007 Buffalo Sabres to the list of teams that have overcome that insurmountable 3-0 series deficit. And he said so in the press conference following tonight’s game. But really who can expect such an outcome? Ottawa only needs one more win, and so far, they’re a fairly easy 3 for 3.

But they still have to win one more.

I could be a homer here, and just say that the Sabres are going to win, “cause they’re the best!” But I won’t. I think that the most likely outcome of a 3-0 series is a loss by the team with the zero. However, I’d like to point out that although in 150 attempts, only 2 teams have ever come back from 3-0 to win a series. 1942, 1975, and ... 2007? (If you do the SAT logical pattern thing... we’d have to wait till next year. BUT... we’re close enough, aren’t we???) :-)

If the Sabres come out Wednesday night and say to themselves, “All we need to do is win this one game,” then perhaps they can. They have done it before. Ottawa is good, but no one is unbeatable. You still have to play the games. And then, after they beat them once, there is a bit of confidence... “Hey, we did it once... perhaps we can do it again!” And if they do, then they have won two in a row, and the momentum builds.

All it takes are a few good bounces, and this “dead” series can take a serious up-swing.

Somehow we get into this pattern of “knowing” what the outcome of a series or a game will be. I do understand it. I have been watching these guys, too. Ottawa just wants it more right now. And it shows. But... the Sabres have wanted it since losing to Carolina in Game Seven of the Eastern Conference Finals last year, too. Perhaps they rediscover that mission, that passion, that drive. Perhaps they become the team on a mission.

Point is, we really don’t know until they play the game. The series is over at four wins, not three. And I hope the Sabres come out playing like that. They are very capable of doing so, as long as they don’t listen to - or, especially, believe the hype.

As the Sabres have been completely amazing this season with impossible comebacks, incredible goals, improbable heroes... I have been saying to my boys all year long that we are “witnessing history”. My thought has always been that this team is so good, it will be difficult to pry the Stanley Cup from their hungry hands. But now that history appears to have been re-written. It looks like the ending will not turn out how I hoped/expected it would.

Or will it?

What kind of history would the Sabres make if they become the third team to win a series after being down 3-0??? I would be more of a prophet than I know! THAT would be some serious history! And, would advance the Sabres to the cup. And would likely be an emotional catapult lifting them to eventually hoisting the Stanley Cup over their deserving heads.

That would just be awesome.

But I’m getting ahead of myself, as I have mentioned that we are prone to doing. :-) The Sabres just need to play one game at a time, and really just focus on that one. Not what they have done, or what Ottawa has done, or what might happen “If”. Just go out and play. Win this game, and we’ll see what comes next.

How fitting though, if this team could possibly do the impossible. That has been their story all year long. Amazing comeback after comeback. Well, there is one staring them in the face, and the stakes are higher than ever.

Let’s just see how “done” these Sabres really are.

Time For a Shave?

From all appearances, my playoff beard is not long for this world.

But appearances can be deceiving...

We missed the first period of the game last night, but from the report my brother-in-law gave, the Sabres played very well, and they did finish period one with a 2-1 lead. I heard a brief interview with Jochen Hecht, and he said they “felt pretty good about the way they were skating out there.” So, the Sabres were poised to tie up the series after a surprising loss in Game 1.

Until special teams came into play.

Tied 2-2 late in the second period, the Sabres were on the receiving end of two questionable calls, which put them in a precarious 5 on 3 situation. Ottawa has been lethal on the power play, and the Sabres anemic penalty killing is just no match. So, the Sens took a 3-2 lead into the third period. (At least they didn’t get two PP goals!)

Fast forward to the last minute of play in the third period. Score is still 3-2 Ottawa. You figure for at least the last 10 minutes they were playing to preserve the lead. The Sabres have this sense though of when it’s “time to turn it on”, and as they did against the Rangers, they scored with less than 10 seconds to go to tie the game. This time, it was 5.7 seconds I believe. Daniel Briere tossed one into a wide open net. Lucky bounce. Good timing. Whatever it was, we were headed to oooooovertime.

First overtime was (from my viewpoint) dominated by the Senators. I don’t have an internet connection here, so I can’t look up the stats, but it just felt like they were getting 2 or 3 shots or at least opportunities to our one. Don’t get me wrong, the Sabres did have some great chances. Emery made some good saves, to be sure, and their defense blocked about fifty-seven shots I think. But, Milsy made some great saves, and we went to a second overtime.

Shortly into 2OT, the puck bounced the wrong way and the Senators won. Now they lead the series two games to none, and the Sabres are in quite a hole. The win was also the first time this season - in 47 tries - that the Sabres have had a two-goal lead... and lost. So now, the Sabres are 46-0-1 when they get a 2-goal lead. Still not too shabby...

But it’s 2-0. Headed back to Ottawa. The Sabres do appear to be in dire straits.

But maybe that’s how they like it.

All year long the Sabres have been a comeback team. Some say that is to their detrement. They wait too long to “turn it on”, instead of playing a complete game. And indeed, playing that way from the start - a complete game - would be preferred. But maybe they just want to have the ultimate comeback. To give the Sens not only 2-game lead, but also super home-ice advantage. Three of the possible five remaining games will be played in Ottawa. The Sabres will have to win at least twice on their ice to take the series.

Again, maybe that’s just where they need to be.

Time to turn it on boys. I kinda like not shaving. So, let’s see a desperation game on Monday, like it’s the last minute of play.

Do it for the playoff beards.

You're Gonna Have To Do Better Than That...

Sabres vs Senators - 2007 Eastern Conference Finals
The studio guys said the Sabres were outskated. "The Senators were the better team," they said. And who can argue with a 5-2 loss on home ice in Game One on Thursday night? Not exactly the way you want to start off the series!

I'm not sure overall the Sens were better, but man, our special teams is either off-the-charts bad, or those guys are fantastic. Two power play goals and a short handed goal (two breakaway chances on the Sabres first power play, with one of those resulting the in the SH goal.) That really set the tone for the rest of the game.

Ottawa did look like they wanted it just a little bit more. The Sabres came back from a 2-0 deficit to tie it in the second period. But on an unfortunate play where a routine clear-out went right to an Ottawa player who threw it toward a teammate rushing toward the net, the Sabres found themselves down 3-2.

And that's where it all fell apart. Passes were being missed, hustle was just not there... That's when the Senators were the better team. They netted one more power play goal to make it 4-2 and ended the game by out-racing our defenseman to a puck and scoring an empty netter.

1-0 Ottawa.

The Sabres get their second chance on Saturday. I actually expected Ottawa to get one of these first two games, just not the first one. Sabres have shown all year they are not afraid of adversity. For a brief moment I actually thought they could still win Game one, down only 2 goals with 2 minutes left. With this team, you never know!

It's a long series... but not if they don't (1) improve the special teams... they just have to, or it will be over fast! And (2) want it more. They have to want it more. Leave everything on the ice, as they say. They've done it before, and if they do it again, we'll advance to the finals.

But we're a long way from that tonight.

Game 2 - 8pm Saturday May 12th on Versus.

Hockey Update

The Final Four are set. Sabres vs Senators in the East, and Red Wings vs Ducks in the West. 1 vs 4 and 1 vs 2. I would love to see Sabres/Red Wings... just for the Dominik Hasek angle. But the Ducks are FAST (like the Sabres) and can score... would be an exciting Stanley Cup Final.

But wait... we have to beat the SENATORS first. :-)

The Sens have been playing great. Great goaltending, great defense and they've been scoring. That's about all you can ask. The Sabres will need to play at least at the same level they did since the last 10 minutes of Game 4 in round two. I think they know that now... so they just need to do it. They'll need to improve their special teams as well. They showed flashes of great penalty killing but the power play was horrendous. (Save for a couple clutch goals in the last two games.)

Here's the schedule for the Sabres series vs their hated division rival, Ottawa:
  • May 10 - Ott at Buf - 7pm
  • May 12 - Ott at Buf - 8pm
  • May 14 - Buf at Ott - 7pm
  • May 16 - Buf at Ott - 7pm
  • May 19 - Ott at Buf - 2pm*
  • May 21 - Buf at Ott - 7pm*
  • May 23 - Ott at Buf - 7pm*

* - if necessary.

I see the series going at least 6 games... though it wouldn't surprise me if the Sabres won in less. It would shock me if the Sabres were beaten in less than 6.

They have had one goal since losing in game 7 to Carolina last year. They're almost there. Four wins to the Stanley Cup Finals. Eight wins to Stanley Cup Champs.

Go Buffalo!!

Controversial Call in Game 4

You may have heard (I forget if I might have said here on this blog) that the Sabres lost game 4 in NY and are now tied with NY at 2 games a piece. But perhaps it might have been different had the video review guys been a bit braver, and made the call that every human eye could see... it was definitely a goal. The goal was not allowed on the technicality that there was no video shot of "white" behind the puck (meaning it completely crossed the line).

Well, thanks to YouTube (so, not 100% credible, I suppose) I found a video that shows the shot we saw on TV where "spacially" you can tell that the puck is over the line, even though covered by the goalie's pad. And then, a view I had not yet seen... a shot from the front. It appears to be taken by a still camera. The puck is visible on its side against the goalie's pad. That would explain why we couldn't see it...

And it would make it clearly a goal.

Oh well. :-)

Game 5 is tomorrow night! Go Sabres!

Here's the photo/video evidence.

Sabres Series Tied

Sabres vs Rangers in Round 2

The Sabres unfortunately did not read my blog yesterday. The Rangers just "wanted it more" for 2.5 periods. The second Rangers' goal lit a fire underneath the Sabres, and they played "like they were on the power play for the last 10 minutes", said a Rangers announcer, but... as they say, "too little, too late".

Now the series is tied, albeit due to a couple VERY close games that could have gone either way... but it is tied. And, the end was tarnished by a GOAL - very clearly a goal - that was not allowed due to a technical interpretation of the rules, I suppose. That would have tied it with 13 seconds left. But, the Sabres still could have lost. (Just, not likely with how they played the last 10 minutes.)

Now we'll see if the Sabres really want the Cup, or not.

Game 5 is Friday in Buffalo, Game 6 is Sunday back in NY. It has turned out to be a better series that I first expected!

Go Sabres!! :-)

What It Takes To Win

Sabres vs Rangers in Round 2
I was watching the second hockey game last night, featuring #5 seed San Jose vs the #1 seed Detroit Red Wings. And I noticed what I think the Sabres might be lacking so far in the playoffs.

Yes, they won the first round in 5 games over the Islanders, and have a 2-1 advantage in this series - only because of a 2OT victory where the Rangers played the best they could, and just barely beat us. But, they have not been impressive in most of the games they have played. They don't look hungry.

The thing our Sabres are missing is the hunger to win. The drive. Whatever you want to call it, I saw "it" in the Sharks last night. The Red Wings might have better players, but the Sharks wanted it more. And they got it.

I'm not sure how (or if?) the Sabres can get that. I have seen them have it this year. People talked about them being able to "flip a switch". It's true. They're scary like that. But the playoffs are for real. If you wait too long, you might not get a chance to flip it "on".

What I have noticed is that when you finish first there are expectations. From without and from within. The Sabres seem to be playing a little tentative at times - you know, to "not lose". They have been winning their games, but have been unable to put games away when they have the lead. (One game the Islanders came back when the Sabres had a 4-1 lead... and I think that was more on their effort than on the Sabres tentativeness... they were great that game.)

It's strange to complain about the #1 team, who has a 6-2 record in the post-season thus far. But... I just notice that they look different than San Jose. And perhaps some other teams. Ottawa really wants it right now too. And they're up 2-1 in their series. That would be a tough, tough series for Buffalo.

But first we have to win this one.

Game four is tonight in NY. Should be tough, but if the Sabres remember what they have been playing for all season... I'd say you'll see the Sabres control and win this game tonight. I won't say easily, but I do think they will control the game tonight.

We'll see if they have what it takes to win!

Tuesday Tidbits

  • NFL Draft
This past weekend was the NFL draft, as I mentioned here previously. This year, the crazy part was the Bills drafted pretty much as they were expected to! How crazy is that? Last year everyone was flipping out over the insane picks the Bills made... this year, everyone is much happier. (Last year, all the picks made the team, and made significant contributions to the team... what does that mean for this year?) :-) Anyhoo... I wrote an overview of it yesterday at my Buffalo Bills Review site. (It's also on the Bills website, but that's a crazier link... you can get there from the BBR site...) (PLUS, there are some fun videos on the BBR site...) :-)

  • Sabres Update
The Buffalo Sabres lost in double overtime on Sunday. We almost missed it due to the confusing side of TiVo. Long story. But, thankfully we did not. :-) Well, sorta thankfully... Game four is tonight... look for the Sabres to take a commanding 3-1 lead heading back to Buffalo for Game 5 Friday night.

  • Macs
Lots of interest in Macs lately. Been seeing lots of folks who previously have had no interest in the Mac OS switching over to the wonderful world of Apple. If you're tired of spyware, virus protection, strange error messages, and would like to just enjoy using your computer - Apple has a great section of their site you can check out: apple.com/getamac. It has tons of reasons to buy a Mac, and answers to questions about switching. AND, all those fun commercials with Justin Long and John Hodgman. :-)

If you're interested, I would love to help you pick out the best computer for you. I can even get some discounts too, so definitely let me know if you're interested. If you don't need discounts, just click here: bwd-graphics.com/apple. Just enter my Agent ID at checkout. Thanks! :-)

  • BEAUTIFUL weather
I don't really like summer... at all. But, I am loving the recent couple days. Beautiful blue sky, sunny days, green grass, budding flowers... and only in the 60s!! That's perfect, if you ask me. :-)

  • Visits
Grammy & Grandpa are coming to visit this weekend (that would be my parents). We're looking forward to it. Have lots planned for the short three day visit. Grandma & Grandpa W (Jen's parents) might be joining us for Friday night too. The boys play baseball on Friday. That would be so fun to have both grandparents there! :-) We're looking forward to seeing them again...

  • Busy...
I'm feeling busy, but not seeing the return in $$$ at the moment. That is a frustrating place to be. Hopefully that will change in the month of May. Lots of new business on the horizon... perhaps I'll have to start nudging this week. :-)

  • Vacation!
One more thing on my mind of late... VACATION! We already have a week of vacation planned in California in late October - JUST ME AND JEN! But my parents have graciously offered to help us have a family vacation also this year, and the only time we can do that is THIS MONTH. :-) I'm not complaining! We'll be vacating to a favorite vacation destination in the Poconos two weeks from Saturday! Can't wait! :-)

  • We're Still Singing...
Because of that newly scheduled vacation... we had to REschedule a concert we are doing this month. They were gracious enough to move the date out one week, and we're looking forward to our evening with them. Now you can hear us at Impact Theater here in Palmyra on May 25th, at 7:30pm. It's free, but you have to make reservations.

So.... we'll see ya out there! :-)

Miller & The Sabres Grab 2-0 Lead

Ryan Miller Makes Another Big Save
The Sabres have Ryan Miller to thank for another playoff victory. That, and some timely scoring from guys who have been doing just that all year long.

We missed the game again last night due to strange TV scheduling, but we managed to catch the final 5 or 6 minutes, and Miller looked as great as they were making him sound. He preserved the 3-2 win for the Sabres several times over... just in the final minutes!

The Sabres apparently had fallen behind 2-1 after two great periods of play from the NY Rangers, but the Sabres scored two quick goals in the third to take their first lead of that game. That has been their modus operandi this season. I don't have the stats here, but it has been quite typical for the Sabres to come back from a 1 or 2 (or more!) goal deficit to grab the victory.

And now, the Sabres have a two-games-to-none lead in the Conference Semifinal. That's not insurmountable for the Rangers, but Lindy Ruff is 6-0 in series where he has a 2 game lead, including two sweeps. Let's hope that trend continues.

Next game is tomorrow afternoon at 2pm on NBC! I have felt like we're watching history this entire season. And the history making continues on Sunday. Don't miss it! :-)

Sabres Win Game One

Sabres vs Rangers in Round 2
Unfortunately we did not get to watch game one of round two last night as we were previously scheduled at a Pampered Chef party at a friend's house... (I had tried to TiVo the game, but later found out that somehow I had scheduled it to record TONIGHT's game!!! NOT the SABRES!!!!) So, we got home just in time to see them signing off, with lots of cheering Sabres.

We watched the postgame show on MSG (who carry the Sabres, but whose real team is the Rangers) and it was interesting. I guess the Rangers hung in there (scorless past the midway point of the game) until Vanek scored a beautiful re-direct goal. And then it all came apart. The Sabres scored 3 goals in 4:05 and that about did it. Well, technically... it did. They won 5-2.

:-)

So, the Sabres lead their series 1-0, which doesn't really mean a lot, except.. only 3 more to go. They are now 5-1 in the post-season, and I'm hoping they continue in that pattern of greatness.

Game 2 is tomorrow night at 7pm on Versus. We'll be TiVo-ing that one as well as Friday night is the boys' first night of BASEBALL! Alex is playing his first year of tee ball, and Ian is moving up to coach pitch... with the big boys! :-) Should be fun. But... I hope the TiVo works this time!!!! :-)
